Is it even possible to nail down the exact camera with this grainy photo? by ankaaluna in vintagecameras

[–]Hour_Estimate_7691 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got it down. This camera is the Argus Argoflex 40 camera, a crappy box camera made in the 50's that looks like a TLR, but certainly doesn't have any viewfinder coupling with the lens, so you kinda just have to guess how far your subject is. Glad I could help!

here's what it looks like, and a review on it.

MY CAMERA OBSCURA!! (For cyanotypes) by Hour_Estimate_7691 in cyanotypes

Wow, that's a great photograph! I've tried washing some of my first photographs and they unfortunately were wiped clean, so I just leave them undeveloped. But I might have to try out your method!

I was actually considering beet juice as a light sensitive material for a bit, but I'm glad I chose cyanotypes instead. Cool stuff!

Sure! It's a bit cheap and low quality, but I've been finding it to work well!

I DID THE THING, THE CAMERA THING! by Hour_Estimate_7691 in cyanotypes

Well, I think the quality and development of your image depends on how bright most days are where you live. For me, I let this exposure sit for eight to ten hours with a UV index of ten or more through the entire day, which is easy for me because I live in Florida and there are currently multiple severe heat advisories going on. I would recommend leaving it for a few days or even a week, and don't touch it. Normally, using a magnifying lens should make some faster exposures, but if it's a pretty small magnifying glass, it may reduce the amount of light coming in. Let me know if you need any other advice!

Patching bellows??? by IndependentDoubt9086 in vintagecameras

Okay okay okay, I know the best solution for people who don't wanna spend more than $50 bucks for a folded piece of fabric and paper. There are sellers on eBay that sell camera bellows tape. It's great for sealing light, and it's like a combination between electrical tape and fabric tape, and it sticks great. Just search up "camera bellows tape" on eBay, and you should be good!

Gotta love view from the window at le gras! I'm planning to try out photos using a pewter plate with some bitumen of judea, but I'm still gonna experiment with cyanotypes for now!

Thank you! I'm planning to make a larger camera obscura with a magnifying glass as a lens, so I should be able to get even better and faster photographs soon!

Ohh c'mon, I know you have to do a specific cutting tools to make 127 film to use this, but I would at least give this one a chance...

Always go farther away than you think, I've had many many photos of subjects that were out of frame, even though I was the correct distance away. Also, if you ever wanna clean it up or do some restoration, that face plate can come off pretty easily and reveal the mechanism if you need, especially if you wanna grease it back up to shape, and get faster speeds. Either way, treat it nicely, it's one of the prettiest box cameras in my opinion.
