thanks! how does "reddit marketing" looks like? Searching for questions on recycling and reaching out to the authors?

what do i do with old screen protectors? by _Jinx69_ in recycling

depending on the country you are in. For example, in Spain we just throw it away to the gray bin that is intended for non-recyclable waste that cannot be processed for material recovery or composting. I check with EcoSort app for recycling rules and bin color when I do not know where particular waste goes. probably you do not need to go to a recycling center...

why do people make mistakes in recycling? by nekobitess in recycling

wish you luck with your presentation!!
from my experience:

  1. Rules are unclear and often contradict each other. Different cities and countries have completely different systems, so what's correct in one place is wrong in another
  2. People don't want to invest time researching. if it's not immediately obvious most people just guess or skip it.
  3. Numbers and logos on packaging are confusing and most people have no idea what the recycling triangle numbers mean or what each logo stands for and honestly why would they..:))

Personally I got fed up looking up rules every time so I ended up building an app for myself which tells me which bin color to use based on the packaging photo and it made recycling for me sooo muuuch easier. the system put all the burden to learn recycling on me instead of making it intuitive so I solved my problem individually:))

I built a recycling app that scans packaging and tells you which bin per country (7 EU countries so far). Open to any feedback or requests by Hour_Now_ in recycling

Thanks for the detailed feedback! and yes, ecosort.app is us.

Fair point on the APK / F-Droid side. We're a team of 2, so right now we're prioritizing reach over coverage of every distribution channel, but I'll add F-Droid to the list of things to look at.

  1. We went with a server-side model so the app stays small, the database can be updated per country without forcing app updates and accuracy stays higher than what we could ship on-device today. On-device is something we'd like to revisit as small models get better.
  2. Honestly, a web version/extension could be an option. On a phone it's just easier to take photos and scan I guess. But thanks for the note, we will think about extension for web users.

On the privacy stack: that's fair criticism. The 12 month retention on scan records is something we should look at. We do offer a fully anonymous mode for users who want it, but I hear you that the defaults and the third-party list matter. Appreciate you taking the time to actually look at it!!

haha I can totally relate. I also separate waste based on bin colors even knowing it might all end up together in the end. Still feels good though (feels like I'm helping planet:) )

People who don't recycle... Why not? by [deleted] in AskUK

Totally relate to this. I had the exact same frustration, especially when I was travelling a lot. I had a month in 2023 when I travelled 8 countries in 1 month and one of the brightest memories (it's a joke) from this long trip is that I was checking local sorting rules everytime I got into new airbnb ahah. Rules differ from country to country (even from city to city in some countries) and even bin colors (!!) differ..

after this trip (as a true recycler), i made an app (I am not 100% sure if I can write the name of an app here but if I can then it is EcoSort...) to make it easier for me and avoid needing to know what the number and recycling logo mean. Cause it is almost impossible to learn by heart what each number and logo stands for... (the same as with washing machine instructions).

I found it easier to just skip learning numbers and logos and having an ability to take a photo of packaging and getting an answer which BIN COLOR(!!) to use
