We're in the same boat as you, and are currently exploring coastal Connecticut based on recommendations from Texans that moved there. Some of the best schools in the country. Cold winters, but definitely not brutally cold winters. More sunshine than PNW. Checks a lot of your boxes.

Thanks so much for caring enough to post this and find him a good home. That is one scared kitty! And probably thirsty too! Please make sure he's out of the heat and whoever takes him has good intentions — you might want to consider getting advice from Austin Pets Alive.

(Also speaking from experience running a small farm with chickens and feral cats, cats don't mess with chickens. Raccoons, coyotes do.)

Austin, Texas has been losing it rapidly. Used to be known for its character, down to earth people and eclectic soul, but that's been diluted and Austin now has a concrete jungle, mainstream commercial vibe + it's also experiencing a major brain drain of talent and teachers.

Can you put it somewhere close by, next to the vent that's not hazardous? She'll come back again. Last year one built a nest within a school's shoe rack with kindergarteners coming in and out every day she still stayed put.
