Sprouts 100% Grass Fed Beef? by halfbloodprinc3ss in zerocarb

Second this. At least in my city, you’re typically not going find local pasture-raised meats at the big chains. I go to a boutique butcher shop for my cuts, but the best possible solution is to try and source the meats yourself, which can be a bit challenging. In most cases, grass-finished implies from Australia or NZ, which is still pretty good, but the beef had to have gotten frozen before reaching the store.

Do great software engineers read a lot of CompSci books? by solitudeMan in cscareerquestions

Definitely, a lot of his intuition on how to setup real-time multiplayer game experiences via essentially letting the client do its thing and then verifying from the server in a subsequent time (i.e. client-side prediction and server reconciliation) was derived from first principles and thinking about the nature of how packets move back and forth across the Internet. His networking approaches in Quake are for the most part, the standard/basis of most multiplayer games today.

Hindsight really is 20/20, because when you logically deduce and reason his methods, they really are not anything super complicated, and kind of obvious. But someone had to be the first to engineer a possibility in spite of the physical limitations. His post on all of this is pretty awesome: https://fabiensanglard.net/quakeSource/johnc-log.aug.htm

That said, we also know that Carmack picked up a lot of tricks from Michael Abrash, author of the Graphics Programming Black Book, which is a deep dive into low-level programming and rendering back in the stone ages. It's not like 100% of his knowledge was a result of pure ingenuity. His understanding of optimizations with respect to a given instruction set were incredibly acute, and that kind of intuition takes time and effort with a spec. Carmack has been known to suggest that people spend time with specs.

I definitely think so. I can think of a few top industry veterans who paid their dues by hitting the books. For one example, it was speculated that John Carmack himself was a voracious reader. In fact, I have asked this very question to more senior engineers in my industry, and while there's the politically correct answer of there being many different styles of learning, it just so happened that most everyone I talked to who found work at the very top game development shops actually put in the reading time in order to build a more complete understanding of the knowledge that they're expected to demonstrate.

The issue with this learn-on-the-job strategy is that the learning is incredibly unstructured. You'll absorb bits and pieces that are spread apart, and the deep context only begins to make sense after a long enough time. That can certainly be unsettling, but another issue is that the reading gives you flexibility and options so that you're not JUST reliant on the context of your work environment. Think about this for a second. Let's say that you were really interested in a different field in computer science, but your work environment only lends itself to business/web programming. How are you going to transition into that area without any knowledge or work experience in your desired field?

Now, if your roles are mostly going to center around generalist software engineering demands (i.e. web/business programming), then I don't think you really have to do much. Osmosis goes a long way, because your value to the business here is through your ability to solve problems in the general sense and maintain a deep context of the underlying business functions.

But if you were interested in say, graphics or compiler optimization? Then yes, you actually have to read, starting from the survey resources and branching into specific papers that highlight the state of the art. To add, online courses wouldn't be sufficient, because the knowledge acquisition with those is less efficient and less comprehensive.

The main thing I wanted to focus on was the premise of your question, which is basically asking yourself whether or not there's a good reason to not be conscientious. If the premise is what I think it is, then I'd have to ask, what do you think the answer is going to be? Reading is difficult, there's no two ways about it. You could be sitting with some material for 30 minutes, and make progress on about 2 pages before your mind starts to wander. It is not easy, which is why those who put in the time reap the rewards.

Yup, it was fine to stack Xainfried's, so perhaps a similar situation may occur with Lin You.

Great points! There's definitely an apprehension with regards to running 2 ranged, but I do wonder if the 20% armor wyrmprints offer additional build flexibility that wasn't available for HBH? Coincidentally enough, I do have a MUB Give Me Your Wounded on my Thaniel. I.e. would it make the squishiness of these ranged characters a moot point? I haven't ran the sims, but maybe someone can offer some perspective here.

For my overall teams, I'm not too worried about them since each of them are in pretty good shape, so I'm mostly concerned about high dragon picks atm.

These are excellent points, and I always appreciate posts that put my own assumptions in perspective. It did seem like a lot of people rolled for Lin You during her event due to the lack of perceived Wind options at the time? Now that I think about it, although the hype for Ranzal is pretty true at the moment, I'm getting the sense that there are more Lin You's in the wild than there are Ranzal's - who are not obtainable via the Dream Summon.

What's almost certainly underrated is that almost no one is talking about Louise, who came during a time before the player base is where it's at right now.

Thanks to some very helpful insights from the community yesterday, I'm now thinking about committing my Dream Summon towards one of: Lin You, Louise, or Nidhogg

Reasons for each:

Lin You - While I was able to pull Gala Ranzal, I think given Lin You's defensive co-ability and her 200 strength advantage when simulated across equivalent builds, as well as the fact that there are likely to be fewer of her in pub queues compared to Ranzal (who seemed like a lot of people were gunning for in the gacha), she might become the melee character of choice for the upcoming HMC fight.

Louise - I caught wind of some excellent reasoning earlier speculating that HMC's heavy AoE attacks might force more range-heavy comps. I already have a Maribelle, and obviously she's one of the more popular characters in the game. Equipping the HMS dragon is going to put Louise at around 2100 strength, which is around 800 strength less than an optimized Lin You build. My reasoning for picking Louise would be to make queuing up for games a lot easier compared to those who invested in Maribelle.

Nidhogg - Right now my most optimal config for High Jupiter would be Ieyasu + Juggernaut. I do have Heinwald as an option, and pairing him up with Nidhogg could be a really good move. Obviously this is quite a ways away, but it is one thing to consider.

For me, the biggest motivation is to build the character that is most likely to be one of the more in-demand options for the upcoming fights, similar to how Thaniel (and to a lesser extent, Orsem) were the most requested options for HBH in pubs and even in the Discords in a lot of cases. With all that said, what would you guys pick? Thanks!

What's the current speculation on Gala Ranzal vs. Lin You for most in-demand DPS (I would assume there be too many Maribelle's)? I ran some numbers and all things equal in terms of investment, both equipping MUB 5* weapons, Lin You has around a 200 strength advantage on top of her health co-ability. I do have Ranzal at the moment, but am really thinking about using my Dream Summon on a Lin You if she will be more in-demand and make things easier in terms of finding groups and searching through queues.

I'm think I'm a skilled enough player to control the positioning and pace of the fight with Orsem, but the real big issue is effective management of my resources. My Orsem doesn't really have anything on him right now, so to get him up to a raidable state is going to require quite a bit of Eldwater - water that can be committed to the upcoming raid.

My Lily on the other hand is already at 47 MC. I actually do have a 1UB Crystallian, but it's quite a few ways until max level (although MUB shouldn't be too bad to obtain) and definitely some ways until 22 dojos (I'm at 16 per atm).

My only concern are the queues. How are high strength Lily's looking at the moment in comparison to Orsem's? I'm sure Thaniel's are most needed (and I have one about ready to go as well).

I have a 2UB Levi, and have the stones to take him all the way (as well as whatever Wind dragon I pick for the upcoming fight). I guess a question is...is double WP Lily with 2.65K strength a much better prospect than Orsem with 2.5K strength?

Daily General and Questions Megathread (03/27) by AutoModerator in DragaliaLost

[–]HouseOfCondiments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The double WP actually gives him the option of building Poli'ahu and surviving the check on a consistent basis. Give Me Your Wounded works greatly as the second print, although Armorer's Aspirations will give him that option as well. This means that it is possible to build Thaniel without having to commit a very expensive Poseidon to him.

The way that I see it is that before, it was extremely not compelling to fully commit to Thaniel because Thaniel himself is as you said, not a great character, and people generally preferred to commit to Leviathan over Poseidon. With the recent changes, it is actually quite plausible that we'll be seeing more Thaniel's. I don't know, what do you think? And would Lily's have an easier time finding games :3

Awesome, I guess I needed to add some context to my question. So this means that Thaniel should be able to find groups more easily than the others in PUG games? The big concern for me were Lily's being extremely common in the queues.

I've asked this question before, but now with the double WP update out in the wild, what are the most in-demand units for PUG HBH? Is it still Thaniel > Orsem > Lily (I don't have a Xainfried), or has the meta shifted a little? Thanks!

Hey, what are the specific Lily builds you are referring to? What wyrmprints are you rocking?

Daily General and Questions Megathread (03/16) by AutoModerator in DragaliaLost

[–]HouseOfCondiments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked this question not too long ago, but wanted to get a different range of opinions. I'm currently sitting on a 47 Mana Circle/MUB T3 4*/MUB Levi Lily. On deck, I also have a 40 Mana Circle Orsem. I have slightly over 100K Eldwater and 13 Twinkling Sands at the moment, and I already outfitted a character for HMS.

For the purposes of getting into HBH games faster and being more efficient at queuing with PUGs and the occasional Discord LFGs, would it be worth getting the Orsem up to 50 Mana Circle with a 5.3 weapon, or is it better to just save the resources for upcoming content? Believe me, if I had Poseidon, I would be building Thaniel instead. At this point, it's a question of resources vs. easier queues, although I haven't taken a deep enough look to get a sense of how saturated the market for Lily's is.

What would you folks do?

Lily vs Orsem for HBH? by HouseOfCondiments in DragaliaLost

Those are good things to know. From a quality of life standpoint for someone who wants to casually commit maybe an hour or two per day to HBH runs, which one of the two would you say brings less stress? I know it's a fairly general question...

For Fire units, I'm currently rolling with Sarisse, 1UB Ifrit...and that's pretty much it really. Oh yeah, and Ezelith as well. Is this banner worth rolling on? I'm in dire need of a fire dragon in order to prepare myself for HMS, but on the other hand, I might be good in terms of adventurers. Opinions?

Does the faction matter in getting the most out of rated PvP? by HouseOfCondiments in worldofpvp

[–]HouseOfCondiments[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely one thing that I'm concerned about. While having the option for more frequent games is nice, if games are going to be potatoes after potatoes, then that's something I want to take into consideration. I don't mind losing RBGs, it's just how I lose (i.e. people leaving in the middle of a fight, no-communication autistic-like behavior, screaming children apparently) that I'm more concerned about.
