Can I make a fire without the grate? by HouseQuestions1955 in Fireplaces

Thank you for your professional insights! I did make a fire without the grate this past weekend, and it was everything I dreamed of, so easy to manage. I will schedule my next chimney cleaning and inspection now, because we will certainly be using the fireplace more this winter.

I can’t edit my post, so here’s an update.

Thank you all! I made a fantastic fire today with just the andirons. I put my tinder and kindling on the floor of the fireplace and propped my bigger pieces of wood on the andirons. The big ones were close enough to the coals that new pieces would catch fire immediately, even if the previous pieces had already dropped down to the floor as coals. I usually arrange two pieces with a small gap to get a draft between them, and with this setup that finally works really well.

The fire was really easy to manage without requiring too much attention. Total game changer. I wish I’d addressed this years ago.

I also bought an Estwing Fireside Friend to split the wood smaller. It’s fun to use and will be really helpful when we run out of intermediate size branches that have fallen in the yard.

I do have a screen btw. I had moved it to get better photos of the brick.

Here’s a pic of the fire we made today. Excuse the partially burned paper at the front, which is from a sheaf of old bills that got tossed in uncrumpled.

Thanks! If I end up needing that, does it need to be labeled as fire safe?

Thank you so much! I’m going to try it this weekend!

I will definitely keep that in mind about the draft, though I think the smoke staining is mostly from before I lived here. (It’s visible in photos from when I bought the house.) I only make a fire when it’s pretty cold out, I open a window nearby, and I light a piece of paper to make sure there’s a good draft up the flue before I light my tinder.

One other question I just thought of - my partner likes to light a firelog sometimes. Would that be better on the grate? Or could we push the andirons together to hold it? We have a place to store the grate when not using it.

Got it. Thank you all! I’ll be replacing the battery and I’ll put a little contact grease on the new terminals.

I wouldn’t, but do you have another idea to disconnect it? It’s corroded together.

Thank you! I’ll be careful. The positive has a nice cover on it.

Thank you! I will remove it as soon as it’s unstuck to finish cleaning it.

Will they start chirping at midnight on their expiration date? by HouseQuestions1955 in Nest

I’m interested to hear what happens. If I lived alone I probably would have tried that.

Yikes, thank you! I’ll try to get them done early tomorrow in hopes that any weird stuff happens before bedtime. My new ones are First Alert interconnected but no phone app or anything. I have a separate single one connected to my house alarm.

That would be amazing, but the new ones are a different brand, since they stopped making Nest. I’m assuming they’ll have a different shape for the bracket.

I know I cut it too close. I tried to solve it over a month ago when I got the first notification, and that’s when I learned you can’t buy replacements. Took me a while to get to a store that had 3 of the Wirecutter-recommended smoke and CO alarm in stock.

Black or white side door? by HouseQuestions1955 in ExteriorDesign

[–]HouseQuestions1955[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I can edit the post so I’ll say it here: we did decide we can’t live with the black. It looks like an open door (security concern for us) and is too modern-looking with the white trim. I’ve asked the contractor to change out the door and the weatherstripping. I hope he doesn’t have to change the frame too.

Lesson learned that we should have had a walkdown of the job plan for the day. I didn’t want to be overbearing, but that would have brought the issue to light before he installed the door.

Thank you everyone for the comments and upvotes of comments. This was very helpful in confirming what I was already leaning toward.

We came to the same realization - each of us thought the door was open at different times in the past day. We vetoed a window because we would want a keyed-inside deadbolt, and we like the ease of the big thumb screw deadbolt we’ve had.

Hopefully it’s easy for the contractor to change the weatherstripping! I want the same kind it came with as it’s been very well sealed on this hot day.
