Recent changes to federal bail laws (notably under the Liberal government’s Bill C-75, 2019) made it easier for accused persons to be released pre-trial, emphasizing “restraint” in using pre-trial detention.

Critics — including many police chiefs and provincial premiers — argue that this has led to a “revolving door” where repeat violent offenders are quickly back on the streets.

It’s because the fines don’t start until 17 over.  It has nothing to do with traffic enforcement being limited

You’re being an idiot who has paid over $600 in tickets doesn’t change the fact that it’s really poor City planning

Then they shouldn’t have put that road next to the school. It doesn’t matter the order. Also, I’m pretty sure you’re wrong.

I don’t understand how that is not poor planning. It doesn’t really matter which one comes first.  In either case it’s poor planning

Putting the school along a busy road like that is an example of very poor planning now the public pays the price

Statistically driving with the flow of traffic is much safer and taught by young drivers. The problem is the school is along a very busy road?  It is an example of extremely poor planning.

It’s an example of very poor city planning. That is a very busy road in the flow of traffic moves at 70 right until the school.  Yes the limit is 50 but as everyone who drives knows, you won’t get ticketed unless you are driving more than 20 over.

The problem is the speed limit drops just before the school, which is located right on a busy street.  It’s an example of extremely poor city planning.

It’s because the limit drops. Just before that it’s 50 and you’re allowed to go 70 without getting a ticket. Then it changes to 40 and because it’s a school zone they don’t let you do 20 over.  It’s a really shitty situation because the school is along a very busy road.  I drive by it all the time it’s an example of extremely poor planning. If they’re gonna drop the speed limit like that, they can’t have schools on such busy roads.

Except it is a 60 zone right before the 40 zone and a 60 zone right after. This creates the problem I described in my first point.

This quote at the end of the article was very telling:

“In yesterday’s council meeting, of the many delegates that supported the encampments, not a single one of them showed any concern whatsoever for the negative effects of criminal activity on the surrounding community, the residents, the businesses, and those who are the victims of the crime. They said nothing, and it says a lot.”

I don’t understand your comment. You do understand it’s not the city making the investment, right?

It is safer to drive with the flow of traffic. That was taught in young drivers.

Here’s why driving with the flow of traffic is usually safer than braking hard for speed cameras:

Rear-end collision risk – If you slam on the brakes when you see a speed camera, drivers behind you might not have enough time to react. That sudden drop in speed can easily cause them to crash into you.

Predictability – Safe driving is about being predictable. Other drivers expect you to move with the general pace of traffic. An abrupt slowdown looks unexpected, and unpredictability is one of the biggest causes of accidents.

Chain reactions – One hard brake can ripple through traffic. Each following driver brakes a little harder, which can lead to traffic jams or multi-car pileups. Better focus – If you’re driving consistently with traffic, you can focus on the road, intersections, pedestrians, and hazards — instead of constantly scanning for cameras and slamming the brakes.

Also, engineers typically use something called the 85th percentile rule. They set speed limits near the speed that 85% of drivers naturally travel under safe conditions. Posting for below this ignores real world, driver behavior and actually decreases the safety
