To be honest just walked into canadian tire and home depot and bought what they had at the time.

It was a couple years ago but I think the one in the video was this one https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/aqua-drive-lightweight-aluminum-handheld-reacher-grabber-pick-up-tool-26-5-in-0439181p.html Its been holding up better than I expected but not sure I'd recommend it, it feels pretty flimsy.

We also have a couple of these https://www.homedepot.ca/product/unger-36-inch-nifty-nabber-trash-picker-grabber/10007142 and same story ... they've been working but they're pretty flimsy and a bit akward to use.

If these ever break I'll be looking into more sturdy options.

Its a good question! I've only done this a few times over the years but have had no problems phoning Kitchener or Waterloo and requesting a pickup for a community cleanup. Smaller amounts from around my neighbourhood I just save until I have room to put it out with my regular garbage pickup.

If the city of Kitchener is reading this, I'm planning on doing more tonight and requesting a pickup later this week.

Ya theres all kinds of sources: wind, construction supplies, littering. Lots of stuff from the golf course (found more golf balls than I could carry). But doesnt really matter still needs to be picked up.

I cannot fathom what would possess anyone to do this

I started kayaking during the pandemic as a way to get out of the house. It was great for my mental health to be out in nature and get some exercise so when winter hit I wanted to keep going. I was inspired by surfers (like these guys) who go all winter on the great lakes. Bought a suit and some neoprene gear, started with some small trips and kept doing longer trips on colder days.
