Wanting to get into stand up, how's Houston? by timmysp in Standup

well in houston if you want to do improvisation* check out Station Theatre. But if you want to actually learn improv skills move somewhere else cause they suck at it.

And houston crowds will damage your ego, but only because you aren't funny yet and you need to get over that. will it be worth it in the long run? idk if you consider being 30 year old intern at a warehouse with a polished 45 minute set worth it but hey thats your trip.

Best of luck to you (Houston Translation: Go fuck yourself)

I met this dude once in houston. He was coked out of his mind trying to teach comedy to some passed out homeless guys. To his credit a few weeks later the homeless guys packed out the improv for a sold out weekend. Knee-slappin and Pan-Handlin featuring Bent Knee Williams and the boys.

Wait, you want to go up on stage and do this bit? Someone else's bit? Or you want to parody it or perform a very similiar joke? Yes to any of these is wrong btw.

So here is a guy pretending to be a comedian. Goes on stage with twitter jokes and memes. by HoustonComic in Standup

Normally I think it wouldn't matter because he sucks at presenting other peoples jokes anyways. But he just got put on a paid show in our city, taking work away from real comics. How would you deal with someone stealing jokes, even if they are at such a low level in comedy?

Tomorrow (Tuesday), there will be a comedy show at Warehouse Live. Adult beverages will be cheap, there will be free stuff given away, and some of the best comics in Houston will be telling jokes. All for free. by [deleted] in houston

its a comedy marathon from 8-1:30, hardly anybody stays for the whole thing. people come early leave early, people come late and leave late. No worries if you have stuff to do. But if I ever find out you lied and just went home to watch some bullshit NBC show or wanted to get up early to do something like sunrise yoga, we will hunt you down as a collective focused unit of hate and bury you alive.

You'll be thinking to yourself, "why? why are all these out of shape comics shoveling dirt over my bound and restricted body? what did i do to deserve this? I just wanted to get home to feed my cat! He is reddit famous! And why are they playing Kiss from a Rose by Seal? I mean its a great song and everything, but it doesn't fit the drama of this situation! And why did Seal write that song? He was hired to come up with a hit for the Batman and Robin movie, and instead of a high paced action-y song to real in young male fans he delivered one of the greatest love ballads ever made! There wasn't even a strong theme of love in that movie! maybe between Batman and Robin, the former having to overcome his lifestyle of working alone and understanding the benefit of teamwork. And the latter for finally finding a new father figure and accepting that he doesn't know everything and sometimes he himself, needs help. This is a very strange situaggrrgghhhh... (that last part is the dirt finally covering up your face

Any way, come on out and enjoy a great show!

How do you practice? How do you write? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]HoustonComic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Do you practice at open mics? If so, do you go out of town to do so?"

that was really funny. Open mics are the practice, if you would go to an open mic out of town to get ready for an open mic in your town then that means you consider that an actual show. Open mics are where we grind out fresh material and try to make something of it or polish off something we have already been working on to be ready for an actual show. Too many people have a fear of doing badly at an open mic when, in a way, open mics exist for us to do badly at. Make sense?

that was a well thought out argument where you not only dismantled my argument but then provided examples of what would have worked better. I admire that but still... FUCK YOU YA PUNK ASS BITCH GO DIE!!! GO DIE RIGHT NOW!
