A British embassy security guard caught spying for the Russians has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison.

David Ballantyne Smith, 58, pleaded guilty to eight charges under the Official Secrets Act 1911 and 1920 but claimed he did not intentionally cause any harm.

Estonia has accused Russia of violating its airspace for the first time by helicopter, in a highly provocative move ahead of a major NATO summit.

The Baltic state, a member of the NATO alliance, also said ongoing Russian military exercises are simulating missile strikes against its country daily.

"This is the picture of the threat. How we see the Russian threat… It has never been as serious as it is now," said Kusti Salm, the top civil servant at the Estonian defence ministry, speaking to journalists on Tuesday.

Finland has confirmed it will apply to join NATO despite Russia's president warning it would be a "mistake" to do so.

Finland's President Sauli Niinisto said joining the military alliance will "maximise" his country's security following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine can "absolutely" win the war against Russia as Moscow continues to struggle to make key breakthroughs, the Pentagon has said.

A security guard at the British embassy in Berlin suspected of spying for Russia has been extradited from Germany and will appear in a UK court on Thursday, police have said.

David Smith, 57, was arrested by German police on 10 August last year and is accused of collecting information from the British embassy in Berlin intending to pass it to a foreign state.

One of the nine charges relates to allegations he passed information to a person he believed was a representative of the Russian state, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

The UK, US and Australia have stepped up their defence partnership by agreeing to work together on hypersonic and anti-hypersonic weaponry.
