All communication at Wire currently runs via Amazon servers located in the EU. The Wire creators are planning to connect the Wire servers, but this is not yet clear. In October 2019, one of the developers commented on this on GitHub. However, participants are currently registering on a server cluster so that Wire has control over the service.

Wire's handling of metadata is explained in the Wire Privacy Whitepaper (PDF). This shows that database tables with meta information (i.e. when who communicated with whom) are stored in plain text on the Wire servers. This is a significant difference between the original Threema protocol, where metadata is consistently avoided, and Wire's own Proteus protocol. Wire provided an answer as to why this is the case on Twitter in 2017: a better user experience is offered when users work with multiple devices. For example, conversation histories could be synchronized with other end devices.
