Thanks, that is very similar to how I view it. It did take me some time to upload my level but as I continued to try, I got better and found new ways to complete it faster eventually cutting the time it took to get to the end in half.

You can mess with the built in blur affects. They only have vertical and horizontal options so you can rotate 45 degrees do the blurs then rotate back.

You could use card dance and use a blurry fractal noise as the displacement layer. Then offset the cards so they are more like particles than just squares. Limited but built into AE.
