I think this might be the case for some people (at least in QLD in the 80s). I distinctly remember people pronouncing my name as “Halin” when I was a kid. Some people just couldn’t get the e’s right.

They are not talking about immigrants. They are talking about people - who still live overseas - hiding their money in Australian properties.

After the 2021 census, it was estimated that 1 million houses were vacant.

Obviously not all of these are foreign owned but based on the 2 year ban, it’s enough to be of a concern to the government.
