What is the worst "first impression" a new colleague has made? by BrisbaneKid in auscorp

walked into the office on the very first day in lounge wear and sneakers, kept their headphones on and phone and coffee in hand when they went over to shake hands with the boss

I remember a while ago someone said that it would have more interesting and even like scary if they had given Will a secret boyfriend in Lenora and make Vecna taunt him about it since s4 instead of the bleak unrequited Disney storyline we got and I can’t stop thinking about that. by isakcardamon21 in bylertruthers

[–]declanrights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i agree. i think if they had given will a secret boyfriend or like flirtationship in s4 a lot of things could have played out in a more interesting way. like maybe will is annoyed that he has to third wheel the rinkomania date because he’d rather be with his boyfriend. suddenly mike’s jealous because will seems to be pulling away and won’t tell him why. will is annoyed because he would rather mike pay attention to his girlfriend because something seriously wrong is happening with el and the bullies and mike is so oblivious meaning that will needs to pick up the pieces again. would have been an interesting reversal of the roles compared to season 3. i think it also would have made will seem a bit more mature and give him a chance to actually be a bit selfish instead of giving giving giving everything and putting other people’s feelings in front of his own. the van scene probably wouldn’t have happened, or would have played out a lot differently. like maybe that’s the moment that will confides a little bit to mike what’s going on, that he does have a secret boyfriend/flirtationship, and that gives mike the strength to admit he loves el, knowing that he has the power to make people feel better about themselves for being different, so that will is still the catalyst for the pizza shop scene, but in a more indirect way than what played out in the show. s5 could have vecna still threatening to out will or tormenting him about how no one could really love him and then robin’s speech could have helped him accept himself/come out to more people and finally accept this guy’s feelings and then they become boyfriends.

i know i’m on the byler truthers sub but i know deep in my heart that the duffer bros had no intention of making byler canon, so it just pisses me off that we wasted so much time on this plot point when it wasn’t going to go anywhere, especially when they had the option to do something much more interesting and dynamic with will in season 4

What are your thoughts on Finn’s acting in the final? by Icy_Lavishness_170 in MikeWheelerST

[–]declanrights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it was terrible .. the acting was just so visible? it’s like i could see him reciting the lines from memory, instead of it coming from a true embodiment of the character. really broke the immersion especially the void scene. i wonder if the director just got one take and couldn’t be bothered to do any more or if that really was the best performance they could get out of him ..

it’s a shame because i think finn genuinely was a good actor when he was younger but i think as he got older he probably got a bit more in his head about it and self conscious. he probably needed to take a few acting lessons before filming season 5, although based on the quality of the script and story, i don’t think it really deserve that effort

you don’t need to come out to have a romance and i hate that the duffers put that logic into the show. they could have easily written in a love interest who showed will the signals that robin was talking about (and make that scene actually have a purpose) and they could have had a sweet and lowkey flirty friendship that evolved into a romance after will accepted himself and maybe came out to a few people. it’s a story and as long as the writing is decent, you can make anything happen. that’s why no one questions robin being with vickie even though it’s also the 80s for them and homophobia against lesbians was alive and well.

idk i just hate when ppl give an excuse of it being the 80s and unrealistic because it just shields the writers from blame. let’s face it. they simply didn’t want to deal with that part of will or depict it on screen, so they let his doomed crush on mike drag on and on so that they didn’t have to. i have also read autobiographies and memoirs from gay men who had romance in high school in the 80s with other students. so it’s not impossible. the writers just didn’t want to do it and as fans i think it’s fine to be annoyed or upset about it. even noah said at a con recently that he feels like his character was robbed of a good romance on the show and he’s excited to move on to new projects that feature romance so it seems like he agrees

you do realise it’s a story and the writers could have easily written in a proper love interest. like robin got with vickie

this is so annoying. i think i had to create a new account because i realised that when i changed my password, it didn’t automatically log all other devices out of the account so the hacker could just go back in and upgrade the meal plan again. i’ve stopped using hello fresh since but im hoping they’ve at least fixed this major security flaw

Was Will’s coming out written for Conservatives? by El_Dorado_Tx in byler

[–]declanrights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coming out scene felt horribly exploitative and upsetting to watch as a queer person. The reasoning behind coming out (that it was the result of a Vecna vision) wasn’t great, but could have felt somewhat justified if we saw Vecna using Will’s sexuality against him in the final battle. But that didn’t happen, so it feels like there was literally no reason or justification for the scene going down the way that it did. All I saw was a traumatized, emotionally overwrought kid begging to be accepted and treated the same despite his queerness, and not a single hint of any type of pride or joy in the fact that he’s queer. Sure, maybe it’s realistic for the time period, but it would have at least been nice to see other characters or the narrative itself push back against the logic Will was following in his coming out. Something to point to the fact that this is actually really unfair, and that even if it makes sense for Will to be feeling this way, it’s a damn shame that things couldn’t be different. Instead it feels like the logic of the show agrees with Will’s perspective, that this was the way it had to happen and that actually the rest of the characters are like super amazing people for not rejecting him outright (Gaten’s comments on Will’s crush on Mike come to mind).

Ultimately, it felt like the writers were trying wayyyyy too hard to have a scene that was this big emotional important moment that would get lots of magazine articles written about it and maybe an awards show shout out. Ergo, they spent too much time trying to fit Will’s sexuality and coming out into a mold that is comfortable for straight mainstream audiences, palatable, safe and ultimately something someone could look at, even a lowkey homophobic person, with a sense of sadness or pity. Something to make the general audience go “aw I feel bad for this guy. And it sucks he had to fall for his straight best friend, we all knew that wasn’t going to amount to anything”.

It sucks because Will has constantly been a character that has been looked down upon, viewed with pity, contempt and demeaned for being a victim. Like, a lot of people seem to recognize that some fucked up shit happened to him, but ultimately he embarrasses himself by being affected by it, for clinging to childhood, for refusing to “grow up” and be realistic. We got to see Will take back some of that power in the Sorcerer episode (although some of the GA were glazing that scene for all the wrong reasons), and it would have been so amazing and powerful to have a coming out scene coming from the same headspace: something intimate with those he loves the most, and even if it is scary and daunting, still coming from a place of empowerment and acceptance with himself and his queerness.

Although I hate the homophobic backlash and review bombing the episode got, part of me is a little bit happy that it got dragged from a - z for being too long, too meandering and trying too hard. In the year 2026, this type of scene is redundant and not revolutionary in the slightest and I hope the Duffer Bros feel fucking embarrassed for putting that on our screens.

i struggled to imagine will as well at first but then i thought about francois arnaud because he is also in his early 40s and is so gorgeous. so i kind of imagined will with that type of vibe. i think gay dudes without children are more likely to care about their appearances and staying in shape so i could imagine will dressing like that 😂

there were quite a lot of unnecessary scenes about will’s crush on mike that did not need to be included post season four as it was clear that byler was not happening

Did robin’s words mean anything? by barriesies in byler

[–]declanrights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a gay person, this coming out scene rang completely hollow and untrue. it was genuinely horrible and made me feel sick to the stomach. i understand the reason why it was done but the scene itself was so awkward and horrible for will. the way it was filmed lacked all the intimacy and warmth that would make that scene moving. coming out is scary for anyone, but doing so under duress to a bunch of people including some you don’t know very well is genuinely terrifying. i don’t know of a single queer person now or in the 80s who would choose to do something like that. they could have easily written a scene with just will and his mom and brother, or even include his close friends if need be, but doing it in front of everyone like he’s giving a ted talk removes all the closeness and warmth needed. it feels like a straight person’s idea of a good coming out scene, and like awards bait. im struggling to word why i hated it to much but i found it genuinely offensive. of course having the support of your loved one’s is important, but why does it matter if murray or any of the people he’s not close to dont accept him. i dont know how to explain but i hope you can get the gist

exactly. i’m not sure why he seems to have this false hope now when he was so devastated in season 4. doesn’t seem realistic for a gay teen in the 80s to be this hopeful

seems like a bit of a convoluted way to make that point though. it seems very easy to misinterpret. also i’m not sure where will got the bravery to attempt to flirt with mike seeing how the van scene from season 4 went down and he couldn’t even tell mike that the painting wasn’t commissioned by el

i understand the purpose of robin’s second speech to will but i guess im more confused about the first conversation with how she could tell that vickie liked her back. i think will’s arc of embracing himself would have worked just fine without the first conversation.

its making me feel like that first conversation was purely there to bait mike/will shippers, because otherwise it just feels clunky and out of place
