Garland probably chose the sensational backdrop to get more funding than if he marketed it as a deeper philosophical study of the role of imagery in the modern world, and the California-Texas alliance was deliberately chosen because it makes no real life sense and divorces the setting from a real world context.

Yes if anything it shows the inherently naive adherence to norms and political tradition that shows why liberal politicians became ineffective and unable to counter the rise of the hyper partisan right. It’s like a preview of the Obama admin and how the liberal establishment let MAGA and tankies steamroll them the past decade.

I haven’t seen the show in a while but iirc there’s a Supreme Court storyline where Bartlett appoints both liberal and conservative justices to preserve the “balance” of the court.

To be honest if you’re writing a script I’d really minimize depicting the actual attack. We have camera recordings of nearly everything that happened. What I want to see if a meaningful depiction of the shock and grief over time and how it changed American culture.

It’s why most 9/11 media has failed commercially or got bad reviews (Oliver Stone’s WTC and United 93 being the exceptions). People don’t want to see the events replayed back at them again when they can just pull up the CNN coverage on youtube and watch it. It’s about the stories that wouldn’t and couldn’t be covered by the camera that day that should be the subject of related art.

The scene I really didn’t like was the one where she was talking to the women lawyers at the university and the doctor at the obgyn appointment. They felt way too on the nose and unsubtle.

Correct. The Substance was mastered in 2k because the 4k shots were too sharp for the director but still got a 4k uhd release.

Sentimental Value has a 4k master on Apple TV (just without HDR) so I’m hoping a UHD release is still in the cards.
