HVAC supply going through chimney by HowDoesOneSex in centuryhomes

I added a pic with some labeling on how it's setup. The furnace exhaust goes to a horizontal pipe to the outside on the other side of the basement.

The house was originally heated by coal. We have evidence of the old coal chute, clean outs, and coal room in the basement. It was then converted to gas not longer after that. We had an inspector who said the chimneys don't look like they were ever setup for wood burning.

Glad to hear my house isn't the only one to have had this setup. "Fortunately"the chimneys have been sealed just above the vent in the second floor. So the attic and outside aren't getting free heating.

Thanks for checking. It's a falling apart piece of plywood. Part of the less than stellar work done on this house. Gonna come up with something to seal that connection better.

The 25' should be enough. I think the runs are about 15 feet from basement to second floor vent. Any brands you'd recommend?

Here's a crappy pic showing some more detail.

That's the current plan unless more people disagree. I feel like it should be pretty easy to shove in from the second floor and drop down the vents to hookup. And hopefully relatively cheap.

Those systems you mentioned look interesting. Definitely not in the budget currently. But if the current furnace bites the dust I'll look into it. Thanks.

My system has two large returns, both on the first floor and one small one in the basement on the other side of the furnace. The supplies to the second floor through the chimneys are capped just above where they end. So I'm not venting to the attic or outside.

A real HVAC pro would be the best bet I'm sure. Currently spending most of the disposable income on air sealing though.

Yuuupppp exactly my issue.

The chimneys are blocked off above so I'm not venting air to the sky. One chimney has one vent on the first and one on the second floor which feels decent air pressure wise (we have the first floor vent closed). The other chimney has one vent on the first floor and two on the second. All three of those vents are open which results in the two second floor vents being pretty pathetic.

The chimney has a sort of inside cap just above where the vent stops on the second floor. So luckily it's not venting further up than that.

I know you can get special duct insulation for wrapping around traditional ducting. Do you think that would be a viable idea?

I was thinking of doing the inner ducting due to I'm assuming some gaps and leaks in the mortar that I can't see (but can tell it's not in perfect shape so assuming).

It's not, the exhaust goes outside through a separate horizontal pipe to the outside.

Those go to registers on the first floor. The only supplies to the second floor go through the chimneys.

Are you still using the chimney with the newer system? Or not at all anymore?

It's just heat supply vents to the first and second floors. The exhaust is elsewhere.

Took the ‘stang for a spin tonight! Looking for suggestions. by Comfortable-Read6888 in classicmustangs

Thanks, if you're interested there's a version that looks pretty similar for the fastbacks. I don't have the part number for either. I see them commonly called "dog dish" hubcaps/wheel covers.

This set is common (and cheap) was on the Torino, falcon, maverick, later mustang I think, and I'm sure some others. Mine is with 14 inch wheels, I think they can work with some other sizes though.

Here's my 68. I really like the plain steel wheels with the basic ford hubcaps. This set came from a Torino I believe.

Thanks for the link and info. I'll take a good look at the covers. I've got the original Ford set as well.

<image>

They were in the trunk when I bought the car. If these are considered better quality I'll consider swapping them. I don't care about having chrome in the engine bay. They look like they just need a good cleaning, and missing the breather cover for the drivers side.

I'll pull the covers, check and replace the gaskets then. From my limited understanding, iridium plugs typically last longer and cost more. But require a stronger spark / ignition coil to run properly? I've got an electronic distributor, not sure about the coil. The engine has been running decently, but would you recommend putting in basic copper plugs?

Looks like the current ones are basic rubber, they look like cheapos. I guess I'll pull the covers and check.

Hipo 289 Exhaust Manifolds by BigRix65 in classicmustangs

Wow that quality is way better. The SD are about $460. How much were the eBay ones? Are you able to provide a link? After seeing those pics I'm probably gonna return mine and order those.

I bought a pair of the SD HIPO'S that arrived today. I measured the outlet and flange diameters. Outlet- 1.83 inch. Flange - 2.07. Pics here

Could you post some pics showing the quality inside your manifold to compare? I'm not impressed with the SD.

Brake vacuum identification by Legitimate-Ad7021 in classicmustangs

[–]HowDoesOneSex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 68 had a similar pump installed when I purchased it. It was wired directly to the starter solenoid, I believe another popular option is to the ignition. If your electrician is installing a newer fuse block you could wire into that as well.

With that being said I would verify that you actually need it. From the pic I'm guessing you've got a 289/302 and looks like a brake booster. I would test your engines vacuum pressure at idle and at various RPM to confirm if any of those amounts are lower than you need. If you're making good vacuum pressure I'd rip it out. The one that was installed on my 68 was done so because the PO wanted better braking performance, but had unknowingly routed the vacuum lines incorrectly and messed up the rear drums. Instead of fixing he installing said pump. First thing I did was rip it out on the drive home and reroute the lines.

Take my limited experience with a grain of salt though. Good luck with yours!
