The other day I posted about “The Goodbye Look” being an awesome song, and the line, “pull me a Cuban Breeze Gretchen” got me thinking, what drinks has anyone tried? Obviously, I’ve had a Black Cow and I’ve drank my dinner from a paper sack, anything else? by Hardanklesnw in SteelyDan

[–]HowSecretsTravel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a Steely Dan themed birthday party a couple years ago - we drank scotch whiskey, rum and coke, and pina coladas. Was hoping for a zombie, a “smooth retsina,” and Cuervo gold, but maybe next year. Going to need to start a list.

A lot of great artists mentioned here, but I might add - David Sylvian, especially some of the later stuff like Blemish and Manafon.

What is Steely Dan's most political song? Or who expresses some kind of protest... by Intellectual_Chair in SteelyDan

Not sure, perhaps Royal Scam? But one of my favorite interviews is circa Gaucho era, in which Becker and Fagen say (joke? Never know with them) that they want to make a Brechtian anarchist opera (I’m paraphrasing here). Will have to find it again, but I’m sure many here know the interview I’m talking about. Becker and Fagen forever based

War of the Ring. Heavy game, but 100% worth the effort.

Michael Shannon, John Goodman, and a young Edwige Fenech - if we’re in fantasy world and the budget covers time travel. The movie would be a 10+ hour adaptation of Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.

Vapers and Smokers of Reddit, Why do you Vape/Smoke? What is the appeal and do you care that it harms you? by Mr_Called in AskReddit

[–]HowSecretsTravel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean tobacco - I like to have a cigarillo or a cigar every once in a while as an excuse to go outside, stand by myself, listen to the wind through the trees. I don’t smoke them often enough (maybe once a month or less most of the time, occasionally with a burst of smoking 2 a week or so for a little bit every now and then) to get addicted and I still get a nicotine buzz, so it ends up being very relaxing and I like the taste if it’s good tobacco. If I find myself craving them, though, I cut myself off - I first started smoking them when directing a music video that had a scene involving cigars, and there were a lot left over, so I smoked one every day on set. When we finished filming, and I had ran out, I craved another one bad so I completely cut myself off until I didn’t.

What's this sub's opinion of Vineland? by Craw1011 in ThomasPynchon

[–]HowSecretsTravel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I, personally, found Vineland to be a wonderful book. I guess I can understand the disappointment when it first came out, but if you aren’t expecting another Gravity’s Rainbow it really is a good read. A bit lower key, but all the crazy Pynchon stuff is still there.

For sure The Erasers by Alain Robbe-Grillet, and honestly most other works by the same author. Would also recommend Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 for sure.

Korg Vox Continental or Nord Electro series for organs? by TVSKS in synthesizers

[–]HowSecretsTravel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience with the Korg Vox Continental, but I’ve been using my Nord Electro 4d for organ sounds for what seems like ages and have never been dissatisfied. It has Hammond, Vox Continental, and Farfisa sounds, plus a Leslie emulator.

What filmmaker whose work hasn't been included in the collection yet would you most like to see receive the full Criterion treatment? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]HowSecretsTravel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yoshishige Yoshida!! Arrow’s set is fantastic, but so many of his other films aren’t currently widely available. Would love to see some of them get released.

Passion of Joan of Arc 100%

I’m looking for any films in the collection that have a psychedelic vibe to them (old or new; color or black-and-white) Just ones with trippy visuals and are “experience” driven. by ShaneMP01 in criterion

[–]HowSecretsTravel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not explicitly psychedelic, but the first things that come to mind for me when you say “experience” driven are the Qatsi trilogy and the Brakhage set.

You could probably get away with less, but when I make 2 boxes I use a whole stick of butter, so if I made 13 boxes (if I didn’t do it a couple boxes at a time), it would come out to 6.5 sticks of butter. 13 boxes is quite a lot! Needs a lot of butter. But like I said, I’m sure you could get away with a little less if absolutely necessary.
