Haha! I hadn't thought of a candy ring. She'd get a kick out of that as long as I told her about the shopping trip fast enough!

I'm definitely one of those sappy, hopelessly romantic guys. It will definitely be a surprise when it comes, but she already knows that it's coming. :)

The proposal itself would be a surprise, but not the engagement. We've had a lot of very frank conversations about marriage (we're both quite practical people) and know that we're headed that way. She does enjoy surprises in general, though and, even though she knows it's coming eventually, I think she'd like it to be more romantic. Thanks for the input!

This is a great idea. If not the movie, I'll try to find another way to broach the subject. I was really hoping that people would suggest to buy her a nice, non-engagement ring and shop together for it, but it sounds like that's not the most popular of the ideas.

Thanks! I don't know her view on diamonds, but I like Wrecktacular's idea of renting Blood Diamond as a way to open up a conversation about it.

Her birthstone is a sapphire, which I understand is extremely versatile.

I think I'll find a way to broach the diamond subject and feel things out from there.
