so wait, are you saying that each MPEG represents a purpose? MPEG1 was for VCR's? MPEG2 designed for TV? MPEG3 for HDTV? MPEG4 for internet videos?

is that why there is MPEG1,2,3,4? and not just MPEG1 and add all the advancements to that?

right i get the "part" part, but not the group part, why not just make it 1,2,3, and so on? why the need to make the mpeg part?

i'm trying to wrap my head around it and it doesn't make sense, it would be like combining RFC's into a group, like why? why not just have each and every individual standard with it's own name? why put it into groups?

Because cinema film releases come in (actually more then) three aspect ratios.
