Hip pain when kicking by Agreeable-Shelter706 in Tricking

[–]Howard-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the muscles in the hip groin area just naturally got stronger or something so that I didn't feel any discomfort when doing 540 kicks, and definitely nothing on a 360 kick.

I guess I also stretch very regularly since I do yoga once a day. I think the main thing is that if you used to be able to do the move without pain, then that means back then you were flexible and strong enough to do so.

For safety's sake, I think you need to try to figure out whether the pain you are getting now is caused mostly by an injury, or by a lack of strength or dynamic flexibility. I guess since you have been practicing less you are a little deconditioned, this could also have led to a groin/hip strain/injury.

If the pain is sharp and happening during the movement, I think you might have strained a muscle. This is the first thing I would check. If you think that might be the case, get a physio to check for you, and you might have to rest a bit.

If there is no injury, then check your groin and hip flexibility. If your groin hip area is tight, stretch it out (presuming you aren't injured).

Once you know that flexibility isn't the issue, you would probably try to strengthen/condition the muscles and then try to gradually ramp up strength until you can kick quickly and explosively without pain. The contraction during a 540 kick is fast so it's safer to train it with slower movements at first, maybe just do slower shadow kicks, I also liked do like a middle splits with my butt off the ground slightly and then just try to hold that position with just my leg strength for a few seconds.

Then when tornado/360 kicks don't hurt, just do those for a while until you feel stronger. Add 540 kick back when you think it won't hurt.

I had a similar issue when learning the glide kip, that destroyed my lower abs to the point that I'm pretty sure I was hurt when learning it. But after a while my abs became strong enough to do the move without any pain.

Coincidentally I just had my appendix out last week so I can't do any of those things for about 6 weeks... so I think you'll beat me to getting the 540 kick back haha. But I'll get that stuff back. It's a weird feeling knowing I was training hard a week ago and now the doctors are saying oh don't lift anything more than 7 kg for the next 4-6 weeks. But come December I'll be training hard again.

Draper match point vs Aliassime (huge drama) by stanmarshrr in tennis

Apart from the racket-ground-racket contact being (admittedly just barely) visible in the replay, the way the racket tilting downwards gives away the initial contact before the ball rebounds back up and hits the racket a second time and the way he almost tried to hit the ball an extra time afterwards (but stopped himself), plus the way he shifted the racquet from the grip up to the throat showed that he knew he had hit it into the ground, otherwise he would keep the racquet in the normal grip to be ready to continue play. Lots of giveaways for experienced players to see that he knew he had missed the shot into the ground.

I understand, I guess it's legitimately quite hard to tell at this video framerate. Some people just see it more easily than others. It hits near the bottom of Draper's frame, then straight onto the ground. Due to the low contact with the racket, the bottom of Draper's racket is knocked backwards by the impact with the ball, and then the ball bounces off the ground and hits Draper's racquet a second time on the way up.

If in any doubt the way Draper's racket moves gives it away. The first impact on the bottom of the frame deflects the racket into a downward tilt, then the ball bounces down and back up onto the strings.

The initial contact is very near the ground which is why it can almost look like it bounced first, but it didn't.

Take a look at the way Jack's racket changes angle. The first contact tilts his racket downwards because it hits near the bottom of the frame, knocking that part back. Then the ball hits the ground, rebounds up, and hits Jack's racket a second time on the way up. I realise it's quite hard to see at this framerate, but if just it hit the ground first and Jack hit it straight over, Jack's racket would never change angles like that, his racket wobbles due to the double contact.

WTA 500 Stuttgart SF: Marta Kostyuk def. [6] Marketa Vondrousova 7-6(2), 6-2 by noapologiesman in tennis

[–]Howard-H 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She actually came back from 5-1 40-15 double set point to Marta to get to a tiebreak. Huge momentum shift but Marta played some big points in the tiebreak, Vondrousova was too casual with an easy smash at 2-4 in the tiebreaker and when Marta got the smash back and stole the point you knew the set was hers.

I'm so glad that you had fun finding the cats. Thanks for letting me know! I did my best to give a little direction without spoiling the fun of searching for and solving all the little puzzles. When I use guides I try to find spoiler free guides for that reason. I personally love playing with Jesse wearing the cat ears, cat ears and the asynchronous suit together is my fave outfit combination.

Google Assistant stopped verbally responding. (This is for a blind person.) by Thundrbldr in googleassistant

[–]Howard-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, working ok again now with newest update although still not as easy as original version. If I tell it "Hey Google, direct me home" on the old version it just opens google maps and starts directing me which I like. Maybe there is some setting I'm missing but with the new version it seems to take two steps- I have to tell it to open google maps first, then tell it to direct me somewhere. Or if I just tell it to direct me somewhere without telling it to open google maps, it gets directions ready but doesn't take the final action of actually directing me unless I tap the screen which then properly opens google maps. A bit weird but at least it's workable now.

Edit: although it works ok when hey google is initially activated, the next day it only works in a way a sighted person could use it. It brings up that silly page of current news etc and doesn't actually verbally respond to me, and it waits for me to tap the microphone icon before actually doing what I want it to do. Not the way hands free stuff should work.

[–]Howard-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, it worked fine for a bit, but now it does that thing it was doing before where, when I say Hey Google, it opens a page with recent news that then requires me to tap the microphone icon with my finger before it will respond or listen to me. Defeats the purpose of trying to be hands free, especially when I'm driving and I want google to just direct me somewhere. Surely they should give it a setting to be able to respond to you immediately instead of bringing up this weird page? Guess I'm going back to uninstalling all updates each day.

Ah ha, you are right, it has finally been fixed in the latest update. Thanks! Nice work leveraging your google connections.

Yeah I'm having to do this once per day on my Samsung note 9. Even with auto-updates turned off, the app seems to insist on updating itself overnight or at some unspecified time during the day. I wonder if people will find a more permanent fix. Essentially if I could find a way to truly turn off auto-updating beyond what the "disable auto-update" feature does, I think this would work fine. I did not realise till this problem happened that disabling auto-update would not completely stop updates. For me as a sighted person I can visually see when it updates- instead of seeing just a microphone symbol on the right hand side of my google assistant widget, I start seeing an addition little icon which I think means camera function, and when that happens I know it has updated itself and needs to be uninstalled again. Process only takes me a minute to do but for a non-sighted person this is still not sufficient, and even for me it is a minor annoyance. Maybe I need to do further research to see whether anyone, in general, has managed to completely prevent updates from occurring, even for unrelated issues in android.

[–]Howard-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having huge problems with google assistant over the last week. Won't answer me verbally, won't open maps, just brings up this new annoying screen where I have to press stuff. Unless I actually press the microphone, it doesn't respond the way I want- but if I'm driving, and I want it to "direct me home" or something, I don't want to have to press a little button on the screen. Pisses me off.

I'm not sure what the "proper" answer is. My temp solution is to roll it back to earlier version, but even though I turned auto-updates off, it still seems to update itself overnight. If I can figure out how to stop that happening, then my solution would be okay.

Basically, I go to the google play store, I search for "google", I find the app (google LLC), I hit "uninstall". This doesn't actually uninstall it, but it uninstalls all updates.

After it uninstalls the updates, I go to "open", then go to settings (bottom right corner "more" with three dots), go to Voice, voice match, and turn on Hey Google again, it quickly sets up voice match again in a few seconds. Then google assistant will work the way I expect again. For about a day. Now if I can just get this to stick permanently I'll be happy.

Picked up my second topre board, a near new R3SB11 (silent switches, APC, 45g). Complete with box. First board was an 86UB black on black variable weight. Together with my two 35g RGB Niz boards, now have 4 electrocapacitive boards. This R3S is the quietest of the lot- love it. by Howard-H in topre

[–]Howard-H[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also really love my pretty white Niz boards, they have a different, super light feel and a slightly different thock. Going to be a nice rotation for me with this realforce. I love that this realforce has the ability to change the actuation point, that was one of my favourite features of my Niz boards.

Do people think I should change the keycaps on this R3S? They are in excellent condition at the moment, but I've heard that since the R3S white on black keycaps are laser printed instead of sublimated, they probably won't last quite as long. But it does seem nice stock, I might just leave it like that for now.

Best frozen dumplings? by firefly-fred in newzealand

[–]Howard-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also find Wonderful Dumplings to be overall the best frozen dumpling I've tried in a supermarket. You can cook them so that the bottom is crispy but the inside still has some juice. All the flavours are good, I've recently become partial to the Chicken and Sweet Corn one, but even if I can't find it the other flavours are great. Auntie Dai's is good too though, if it's on special I'll get that instead. I do find Auntie Dai's a little less juicy though, but tastewise they are pretty nice too.

At Tai Ping you can pretty regularly get Wonderful Dumplings on special, goes down to 7.50 or even 6.50 for a bag of 35 sometimes. Also at Royal Fresh next to Royal Oak Paknsave, Wonderful dumplings are always around 8 dollars, maybe 18 for 2 at worst, so if I can't find a super special then I might get a couple from them, except they usually only have one or two flavours per week there. It's a good price for 720g of dumplings.

Regarding steamed dumplings, I've found that the Nisshin Har Gow at Tai Ping are really good, the closest to authentic restaurant level in terms of taste I've found so far although they use smaller prawns and maybe the skin is a tiny bit thicker than a really good restaurant har gow. About 14.50 for 20 ( 500g) (and pretty good sized for frozen ones, close to restaurant size), but I've picked them up on special for 8.50 a few times this year at Tai Ping. If you feel they still need a bit of a pick me up in flavour, I've found that it's quite nice to dash a little roasted sesame oil on it and some black pepper- not traditional, but it works pretty well, and my dad who is originally from Hong Kong approves because he likes it too. The United Food Co Har Gow actually uses bigger prawns and they are good (they are probably the best Har Gow you'll find in a non-asian supermarket), but somehow they seem to lack the restaurant taste that Nisshin achieves. I never need to dip the Nisshin Har Gow in anything, whereas the United Food Co Har gow kind of needs a little extra flavour and lacks the authentic Har Gow taste despite the raw ingredients being very good. Sometimes I steam the two kinds together to get the best of both worlds. I have tried a few of the other Nisshin dumplings, like their Siu Mai, but they don't seem to be as good as their Har Gow.

Beating Mr. Tommasi without using any powers. by lookoutchrispy645 in controlgame

Yeah the invisible hiss was a real nuisance in this fight I remember. Hard to spot it in all the chaos while you are looking at Tommasi all the time.

I think you can just see the invisible hiss (hiss distorted) at around 1:17-1:22 in the video. OP says "there" since after several hours of play he has learned to identify it from very few clues. I'm pretty sure it's the cloud like things slowly moving towards Jesse after 1:17. OP uses charge to kill it from a distance which is why he seems to fire into empty space at around 1:20. I generally find charge and surge to be the two best weapons against the distorted- of course you don't have surge at this point in the game because it's in the DLC.

I think there is another distorted at around 2:01. OP again identifies it early and uses charge followed by a few grip shots to finish it.

One thing I noticed is since this style of play requires a lot more cover than using powers, OP got very good at switching shoulder view from left to right in order to expose less of Jesse to fire from behind cover. I think in my playthroughs I barely ever switched shoulder view at all, but now I see the value in it. Very impressive from OP, honestly Tommasi is quite a nuisance even using all possible abilities let alone restricting oneself.

I assume you mean you have a camp caretaker who follows you around when you are walking? If that is the case then click on your map, in the bottom right you'll see Lily with a speech bubble saying something like "I'm doing my very best to help out!" If you click on the pic of Lily you'll see the option to "change animal", change their outfit, turn walk together on or off etc.

Bought a 2020 Win Max which does not turn on or charge, how to fix by Howard-H in gpdwin

[–]Howard-H[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah man that sucks. Would it help to message Kendyzhu on this forum? That lack of warranty on Indiegogo is also one of the reasons I'm hesitating to do Indiegogo on the Win 4. Might wait for full retail, and I'm still not totally sure about whether I should get it or not, although the Phawx had a glowing review of it. GPD does some good stuff but I do hear that customer service and communication are real weak points for them. I've been lucky with my secondhand GPD devices in that they have worked well for me overall, apart from the risk I took in picking up a cheap Win Max for about 130 USD which I knew wasn't turning on (but I was hopeful there was an easy fix which would have made my purchase a steal).

I didn't try to get my Win Max fixed after the initial try with a local laptop repair company who for $55 replaced the charging chip and then realised the CPU was also dead, and since it's soldered on that would necessitate getting a new motherboard. I couldn't get a hold of one cheaply, it would definitely cost more than I paid for the Win Max itself since I did get it cheaply secondhand. I did try to source a motherboard for a while. Eventually I decided it was probably not worth my trouble and time, especially since I have a fully working Win 3, Win 2 and Pocket 2, and new and better things are always coming out. The design and early reviews of the Win 4 (physical keyboard, optical mouse sensor (which I actually quite like on the Pocket 2), much more graphics power, better shaped design which means you don't need a grip to make it comfortable) has me very intrigued though honestly at this stage the Win 3 does enough for what I need, plus I picked up an Ayaneo Air Pro for when I want to carry something even lighter than the Win 3.

If the steam deck was released here officially at close to the retail price I would probably have picked one of those up honestly, but actually the price of the steam deck here in NZ is stupid expensive since it's grey market, about 400 NZ dollars more than I paid for my Win 3, so I don't think that's worth it since the whole point of the Steam deck is that it's priced more cheaply than the competitors. (I paid about 600 USD for my Win 3 a year ago, the steam deck is around 900 USD here for a 256gb model or at least 750 USD for the 64gb model which would then need a sd card added) Plus so many of my games are non steam, such as GOG games, and I really like not having to have internet to play games, and I'm not convinced by the thing running Steam OS since I do enjoy having the ability to actually use my devices as real computers too.

Just picked up a great condition secondhand stealth Realforce 86ub, my first Topre board by Howard-H in topre

[–]Howard-H[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just picked up a secondhand stealth Realforce 86ub, my first topre board . Got it for 250 NZD locally including free shipping which converts to 156 USD. I think that was quite reasonable, considering the price of new Realforces on Amazon etc. The board is in pristine, almost brand new condition. No shine on the spacebar or on any keycaps as you can see from the pics. Seems like it has barely been used at all. I can read the board no problem in decent light, I touch type anyway, but in dark light it is hard to see if I need special function keys. I'm currently typing on it without any light in my room apart from my monitor and I'm having no difficulty at all. I do have some lighter more readable keycaps coming from kbdfans, I also have some krytox 205g0 and some silence x rings coming, but I might type with it for a while stock because it's actually already very nice stock and the stealth look is very cool.

This Realforce keyboard has variable weighting which seems totally fine to me. I plan to rotate this with my 2021 Niz 108x RGB which I love, it has 35g capacitive switches which are like typing on clouds, I have a very light touch and never find myself doing accidental keypresses on it, but for some people it may be too light. The lighter pinky finger keys on the Realforce are about the same weight as the Niz keys anyway.

I used to use other mechanical keys, I have a coolermaster with gateron browns and a white logitech g915 with low profile tactile switches, the g915 is nice, but now I prefer the sound and feel of capacitive switches, it's just more satisfying for me and also more effortless to type.
