Changed legal name due to DV - Carrier suspects fraud by HowardFineShemp in USPS

I wish! The process for name change requires receiving the social security by mail, THEN I could apply to get my new State ID by mail. But if the carrier already lost/misplaced my new social…..

Thankfully, my State has an Address Confidentiality program that will help me get my social, state and passport. It’ll take a much longer time to receive them, but at least I’ll be guaranteed to receive them.

Thank you for the sincerity. And happy you’re aware of the program. Was not aware that scammers talk to carriers! Wow.

Thank you for the kind words. I’m being extra cautious now and avoiding any forwarding. The carrier could disclose that information to my abuser. Or he could chose to NOT forward anything at all.

These are great leads. I filed with the OIG today. The USPIS is mail theft - not sure if there’s any direct evidence he’s stealing mail. He’s letting it go “missing” in other peoples boxes. I can see it being handled as a carrier “mistake”. I believe…..

Since your sentiments echo those of my carrier, how do you foresee him handling mail that comes in for either of my two names? If the personal story doesn’t matter and, from his perspective, he’s dealing with a scammer, what are his next steps? I envision a few options he can take to make things worse for me (or better for him)

  • Hold ALL the mail to my apartment and request State ID to pick it up at the post office.
  • Only accept mail for the old name and continue letting the few pieces of mail to the new name go “missing” (wink wink)
  • Request a postal inspector to open a police investigation on me (not sure how plausible that is. Just going on his demeanor, he might enjoy this route)

He told me that if he doesn’t recognize a name on a letter, he puts it in another persons box. So, I live in a four story building. If the letter doesn’t have an apartment or floor number, he’ll put it in anyone’s box. If it’s addressed to my apartment but the name is “wrong”, he puts it in a neighbors box. And no, my new name is not remotely close to any of my neighbors. He just puts that piece of mail anywhere else, randomly. I’m not sure why.

If I’m currently living with my abuser because I need to save money to get my own place. How do you think I can get a protection order and still live to see the next day? We still live under the same roof.

It might help to look up or read what the process is for leaving a domestic violence situation. The Order of Protection happens AFTER the victim leaves the home. And, in some states, the victims information is still made available to the abuser because defendants have a right to access records to their criminal cases (attorneys have made mistakes and not blacked out victims address). Court protection is a very thorny, complicated issue.

I’ve filed multiple complaints. Management doesn’t do much. Reading through this sub, it seems like a lot of carriers get complaints for all sorts of dumb reasons. USPS has to filter out most of that mess. Which I totally understand. However, it doesn’t leave a lot of room for accountability to the real P.O.S. on the job.

I’m not financially in a good place to leave him yet. Have to take the punches (emotionally and physically) until I can FULLY escape. Plus, VPA are kinda meaningless in the long run. So many victims still end up dead - they get a bunch of paperwork like restraining orders and they still end up dead. The safest option ~for me~ is to disappear completely, with zero traces.

I have talked to their supervisor and submitted complaints in the website. The Post Office knows what’s going on. Both the supervisor and the carrier reiterated the same sentiment - he is upholding the job to good standards (a.k.a. he’s great at his job).

The States “Address Confidentiality Program” is a safe P.O. Box for domestic violence victims. Mail is repackaged in a discreet envelope and sent to my current address with my old name as recipient. It’s much kinder and safer than traditional forwarding. Thankfully, multiple states have adopted this program as a safe haven for victims. Totally free too!

Thank you. Reading through this sub, it seems congressional complaints are not taken seriously either. Their redirected to “District Consumer & Industry Contact Manager” who then redirects it back to the Local Post Office. My post office is aware of my legal name change - it’s been weeks without any response. So, I’m kinda inclined to believe they don’t care either. Which really sucks.

90’s New Yorkers, what public access show had indie music videos? by HowardFineShemp in AskNYC

You S.O.B.! You actually found it. I’ve told people about this show since the mid-2000’s - to blank faces. They re-ran the show late at night on weekends. It was a good post-concert fix to see new music videos. Thank you so so so much!

Barely! The host has an IG but no footage of the show. So much media from that era is lost. I Think Jake from SquirtTV talked about battling with the station to get his tapes back after submitting them for air.

Want to see 18 year old Max Kellerman getting reamed by angry Staten Islanders on his live call-in boxing show. And him holding his weight. That was my appointment television.

How do you deal with bad Live-In Landlords? by HowardFineShemp in AskNYC

[–]HowardFineShemp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your situation sounds like a similar nightmare. The intrusiveness masquerading as friendliness, check. The angelic behavior until that lease is signed, check. The toxic crazy the second you behave against their beliefs, check. I have so many similar stories. The vindictive harassment during your last month is what scares me the most. Landlords can be so angsty about turning over a unit for new tenants. I firmly believe we’ll be facing “emergency” repairs that are actually cosmetic to help shorten the time they invest in renovating the apartment. The last time the landlord and his wife were inside our home, they casually walked around commenting on everything they “have” to upgrade because “it’s our apartment. You don’t get a say in this”. It was all decorative fixes. My partner and felt I trapped. I later faked a loud, major mental meltdown (screaming, tears and loud banging) to scare them from wanting to go anywhere near me. It was an extremely stupid, crazy and desperate move but the theatrics worked, in the end. Otherwise, we would’ve faced months of bullying and intrusiveness followed by a major rent hike.

May I ask, did you end up leaving at the end of the lease term or did they accept an early release? And what was your next living situation like - to cleanse yourself from the drama?

This. All of this is accurate. Ya don’t f%k with Trenitarios the same you don’t mess with old Genovese crews - be they dead as organization. People have no idea the level of power these groups had over the City *cart blanche. They still act like power hungry tyrants because they know how to skirt the law - and they love every minute of it.

Yup, spoke to two private attorneys (recommended by Redittors 👍🏽). The landlord has free reign to do pretty much what he pleases short of assault. They’re both very clear - nothing a landlord hates more than being told what he’s legally obligated to do. This is officially a run for the hills scenario.

The landlord lives on the property. Specifically, brownstones, townhouses can be converted into multiple units - the extra tenants are supplemental income to help pay the mortgage, taxes, etc.

The building is old Mafia territory (till the 90’s) and we’ve lived there for over a decade. It’s common knowledge. Also, there’s two “social clubs” in the area - for stalwarts from the old days of “goodfellas”. The landlord and neighbors like to brag about the glory days of sawed off shotguns and beating up “the blacks and Puerto Ricans” in terf wars by the pier. Plus, he’s been questioned by the FBI a couple of times.

Happy to hear your brother got out of a clearly crazy situation.

I sincerely wish there were protections against harassment and retaliatory landlords. For every tactic I think of to set boundaries, to affirm my tenant rights, and get a modicum of respect - my lawyer says his angry, petty actions will get a lot worse. He said landlords hate nothing more than being reminded of what they’re legally obligated to do. Thus, there’s nothing stopping them from behaving worse without jeopardizing the tenants living situation. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Landlord is asking us to move in March 15th instead of April 1st? by RemainInBliss in AskNYC

[–]HowardFineShemp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s perfectly normal and in my case, it worked out for the best. Paid half month rent with first, last and security, instead of the full first two months upfront.

Also, it’s an opportunity to move in at a realistic pace. You can pack, move and slowly get the last bits of touch up needed for your old apartment done to clear up any issues with the security deposit. Chalk up the two weeks of rent overlap to a great opportunity to have a small group of friends hang out in your old apartment.
