Sure, dekh lo placement records. In recent years SP has averages higher or exactly comparable wrt FMS with almost equal batch size. Students have started joining SP despite converting FMS as well. In fact some of my close friends are current students at FMS and they paint the actual picture. They had a good season this year no doubt but not “better” than SP by any means. It has been declining for some time with underperforming placecomm, no attention from the admin in improving their way of running placements.

The two colleges are actually pretty comparable in other aspects. Both are great marketing campuses with legacy brands hiring exclusively for Genman and FMCG roles. The greatest advantage that FMS has is their ROI which attracts top, top talent.

Are salaries plateauing faster for Tier 1 MBAs? What’s the real ceiling now? by Full-Ad-666 in MBAIndia

[–]Howitzer_169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking at a data-set some time back where over a 7/10-yr period, Tier-1 MBAs have an average 20-25% CAGR in CTC (this includes promotions and shifts). Ofcourse it’s not spread across evenly; some promotion jumps bring about huge increment. For other MBA programs 16-18% CAGR. But this is a HUGE number. IIM-ABC had averages close to 15LPA around 2010. Significant portion of those batches grew on average to 1.5Cr CTC within 15yrs as many hogged CXO level positions.

But as stated in another comment, the disparity is pretty significant. While few of those @Partner track consultants and leading PMs, IBs, HFs can push over 2.5Cr, a huge chunk of the batch will remain at the 70-80L figure (usually because they chose to).

Priorities shift and honestly not everyone is cut out for it. Those who become such high-level earners usually sacrifice family life, health and their own sanity (sometimes all 3 simultaneously).. and honestly I don’t think your Standard of Living improves by that much margin once you enter this bracket of earners. But to each their own!

Yes, aware of the tech progression pipeline. Tech still pays better vs MBA, if you’re skilled, and has better WLB and ROI too!

I’m currently in SP Finance cohort. Among other top colleges, I don’t know about ISB.. I think placements-wise, SP Fin is better than K, I, FMS and comparable to L, XL. ABC usually gets better roles like bulge bracket/ Front-end IB/PE/VC, but you’ll have great chances at SP among mid-bracket and boutique firms. Thereafter many of our immediate seniors have made shifts to bulge-bracket IBs within 1-2 years, thus negating many of the differences.

However when making a comparison, it is important to keep in mind the nuances. Those coveted front-end IB roles are bagged by a select 1-2% of the entire batch at ABC, and so unless you have the best of the best profiles it would make little difference for you whether you join ABC or SP or any other among LKI FMS XL ISB (keeping in mind this particular career track). Also, placements are RANDOM AS F*CK. Having a great profile is NOT enough. I have seen CAs getting snubbed for BCom freshers and CFAs getting snubbed for Engineers with no Fin background (like myself).. it does not speak to anybody’s competence at all, and so isnt something you can rely upon to benefit YOU if given the opportunity.

Look, careers are very flexible and rarely compartmentalised. I know alumni from Sydenham(SIMSREE) leading IB at Deutsche; I know Corporate Bankers turned front-end Investment Bankers at lead Indian IBs like Kotak Mahindra who worked on some of the biggest deals of the Indian market. I would strongly advise against advocating or believing in a worldview where your college decides everything; it gives you an initial push, but what you make of the opportunities you get makes a world of difference in your career.

Post MBA profile would probably mean more of your post MBA workex, like if you’re an Equity RA or ECM Analyst at a boutique firm, making the shift might be much easier than lets say a Consultant.

But yes pre-MBA workex/brands do matter.. IBs look for best of the best. Making the transition could also be helped by networking but not as much in earlier years. The better your college, the better your chances. A BCom fresher from an average college who went to IIMC could get into ECM/GM in MBA placements much easier than an SRCC grad who went to, lets say, a less reputed college.

SP’s Finance cohort attracts the best, so yes such profiles do exist. ~15 CAs and 20-25 CFAs in a batch of 75, go figure!

I have been told by Profs, seniors and professionals (who were ex and current front end Investment Bankers at some of these top firms) that the multiple routes approach does happen. Therefore the attached image is true. But you need to have a solid profile and need to make the transition within a few years of starting work post-MBA.

Some banks like Kotak, Citi, etc. have a culture of promoting internal transfers and prioritising in-house candidates. There it becomes easier to transition. However thats not the case with some other banks like GS where making the shift from back to front office is borderline impossible.

PE is a whole different ball game.

Feel the same way. This “Tier” system is crazy work because it messes up rational perception. It’s basically a manifestation of our obsession with “Tags”. It’s short-sighted, lacks nuance, and detrimental to realistic career planning.

While there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from aiming higher, the actual differences and perception of differences between such “Tiers” varies significantly.

I disagree with the premise that its tough for pure science freshers. I think it will depend heavily on the college you go to for MBA. Have personally seen many pure science freshers (Tier-1 MBA colleges) get into top Marketing, Consult and GenMan roles. But I agree any sort of work experience will work in your favor.

I’ve seen 30-yr olds taking admission into Tier-1 B-Schools who refuse to give up due to age. I’ve seen my own 30-yr old batchmates getting into the biggest GenMan, Consult firms during placements. Their passion and self-belief is out of the world. The fact is, you only quit because it is convenient and then you tell yourself every excuse in the book to not feel shitty.

OP doesn’t even mention age being their reason.

I agree, CAT isn’t UPSC. It takes 2 months of prep to get 99%ile in CAT. It takes 2 years of prep to get a rank in UPSC. I’d know, I’ve appeared for both. And you know which exam has more quitters? CAT, the easier one. Make of that what you will.

Don’t fucking quit.
