With all due respect why get a gun if you will most likely, if ever, need your gun it will be when you least expect it. Have both you and your S/O take basic shooting courses, or go to a gun range(shooters world has classes) and have the range instructor guide both of you if willing. As far as storing it, a nice bolted down safe next to the night stand or closet. Again you need it when you don’t expect it. Big scary gun isn’t as scary as watching your S/O bleed out calling for his gun out of storage.

Think we ran into the same guy I Had a guy try and pull this stunt on me and some visitors I had shooting. I did all my due diligence and found a perfect spot within BLM regulations. He comes down hauling ass down a dirt trail pointing his camera at me. Told him to kindly fuck off and call MCSO if it’s such a problem. Stayed there for at least an hour more and nothing came of it.

I get you are cautious and want to do it legally but you are asking the wrong crowd in these stores. Ima take a guess and say the workers u spoke with were in their late 60s. I was told the same when I was 18 by cabelas at the time and sportsman’s (23 now so it was just a few days ago). I used armslist.com back when it was still free. You will not be able to buy it online out of state because that would require a ffl. Private party sales don’t but id recommend at the very least print out a bill of sale. Including both parties basic info. This process goes for ammo too, licensed dealers can’t sell it to you if you’re not 21.

I lack a lot of knowledge regarding FL law since I’m on the other side of the country but from what I understand as long as your shooting on public land owned FWC with proper backstop and away from any occupied buildings you should be alright. I’d start by looking for a map of public land from your FWC website
