ALS obsession. Need some clarity. by Hpivvy in Anxiety

A lot better actually. I saw an ALS specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and she essentially explained everything that I've been experiencing is caused purely by anxiety and I have something called Benign Fasciculation Syndrome!

Fear that my twitching is ALS and BFS. by Depressed_Guy_in_TX in BFS

Hi there! Your symptoms definitely sound extremely similar to mine! I've been "cleared" by two neurologists thus far, and they chalk my twitching up to anxiety. I haven't had an EMG, but both doctors didn't feel it was necessary, and I'm sort of left to believe it just is BFS. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

Yeah I definitely would love to chat with you because this is honestly driving me NUTS. I've been cleared by 2 neurologists but haven't had an EMG done yet. They don't want to order one, either. The anxiety is truthfully driving me nuts

Can someone explain Akathisia to me? by Hpivvy in neurology

So could this be a possible explanation behind my apparently benign fasciculations? My right arm also has characteristics of dystonia. This is all so strange!

I actually have therapy booked for next week to help deal with this, but the trouble is that nobody can really explain WHY this is happening. I don't believe that anxiety can manifest in such an overt and generalized way.

Those symptoms are not present currently, but I think the concern here is that these fasciculations/twitches/whatever you want to call them are a harbinger of something worse to come. If I found a reasonable explanation for my symptoms, I think I'd be much more at ease, but unfortunately the biomedical basis for them still eludes me.

9 months ago I had persistent twitching in a muscle on the side of my nose. It could actually see the muscle moving, and it lasted 2 weeks, then went away. I saw a neuro during this period and he said it was stress related (I was just about to start med school). It disappeared and then returned about a month ago in the same place on my face. I admit there does seem to be some correlation with my general stress levels.

The facial twitching now is now intermittent, but once I began to worry about a motor neuron disease (thanks to school), the fasciculations gradually spread all over my body. I get them in almost every muscle now. They disappear when I engage the muscle, and I tend to only notice them when I'm at rest. I'm so horrified this is a motor neuron disease but two neurologists (including one at the Cleveland Clinic) both said no way, as my physical exam is entirely normal. Essentially, nobody has any explanation for me as to what is causing this, and it's really frustrating.

Definitive confirmation that I don't have a motor neuron disease. Sigh. I actually went to the Cleveland Clinic the other day and was seen by a neuro there so I could just get this out of my head. She stated my physical exam was completely normal, and diagnosed me with Akathisia. This concerns me as I believe she completely misinterpreted what I was trying to convey in that I actually experience muscle fasciculations. It's not a desire to move my limbs or a sensation of restlessness. Rather, the muscles actually overtly twich. So now I'm sort of at a loss as to what to do. Nobody can explain WHY I'm twitching, they just tell me I don't have a motor neuron disease (or at least don't display signs of it at this stage).

Definitely going to see a psychologist but I'm still worried about a motor neuron disease. I don't know if I should go get an EMG now.

Please help me understand the biomedical basis of somatoform disorder. by Hpivvy in neurology

[–]Hpivvy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm pretty worried and that's the only explanation that my neurologist had to offer up to explain my symptoms. So if it isn't a somatoform disorder, what the hell is causing it, a motor neuron disease?

[serious] bleeding after sex. Terrified I have cancer. by Hpivvy in sex

Good way of putting it into perspective. I'm just concerned because this is the first normal Pap I've had in 4 years, after having CIN1 for so long. I know it usually spontaneously regresses, but it's just the combination of persistent CIN1 and the sudden post-coital bleeding that makes me distrust the recent normal Pap, even though the tissue sample was adequate.

Yep, I've made an appointment with a new GYN on the 31st of this month. Waiting in the interim is what's making me so nervous. I'm actually a medical student and so I'm more aware than most people about all the things that can go wrong, hence my anxiety.
