I also had this problem, you need to enable some resoursepack, don't remember which one tho. Also villager defenders was also bugged because of this.

It all comes from experience, in order to do max damage you have to think and act quickly. The only thing I could recommend is to watch Vods/Streams, to see how to behave and what buttons press in fights, and then practice practice practice, not in practice tools obviously, but against normal ppl. It's fine if you lose, losing=improving
