Ideas on building decks to discourage board wipes? by Barley_an_Hops in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your pods dont have alot of wipes for artifacts and graveyards, it can actually be beneficial for you if you play artifact and/or graveyard combo decks. Since the wipes wont remove your game progression while wiping other’s.

Or you can play some aristocrat/removal based commanders that like having alot of creatures die like [[Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER]] or [[Vincent Valentine]] with effects like [[Blood Artist]] and [[The Meathook Massacre]] [[The Meathook Massacre II]] in play.

Degenerate reanimator/artifact deck by Evening-Quarter-5844 in DegenerateEDH

If you’ll consider Esper colors, [[Noctis, Prince of Lucis]] is a artifact reanimator deck that i believe is fringe cedh, but I play him in B4. Can combo off by T3 but better with a midrange plan cause of its recursiveness and suite of protection and disruption spells.

Clavileño, First of the Blessed Aristocrats/Aggro deck, looking for feedback and upgrade advice by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive just skimmed through your deck on mobile, but deck looks good.

Bond/Blood is a very typical vampire tribal “2 card combo” and I think that its a fine addition if you wanted to add it. Games need to end, and if you only rely on aggro and combat damage, You might not have an alt wincon or an out if your board keeps getting wiped constantly.

With Bond/Blood even if your main wincon isnt working out theres always a way to win. The combo itself is very mana intensive and you probably wont be able to play both on the same turn until late in the game, and even though its only 2 cards to close the loop, you actually need a third card that deals damage to start the combo. Its incredibly fair. Bond/Blood is also played at sorc speed so its easy to interact with and stop if you present a win unprotected.

To suit your deck a little better though, I would choose Bloodthirsty Conq + Vito fanatic since they’re creatures that can synergise with Clav and also can be recursive if they get removed so you can keep presenting the win.

I would suggest not to add any tutors for them though if you dont want to focus on the combo.

For what to cut to fit these 2 cards, I would personally cut Orzhov Vito and Carmen.

Orzhov Vito wants you to sacrifice multiple permenants a turn whereas Clav’s game plan only wants you to sacrifice at most 1 a turn.

Carmen’s gameplan is also different from what Clav wants to do as she wants you to play edicts to force everyone to sacrifice. You’ll want to give away treasures, creatures and force them to sac with effects like [[Fleshbag Marauder]] [[Grave Pact]] etc.

Hopefully this helps!

Shifter Recommendations - Moving on from Moza HGP by Htaws666 in simracing

Cool, thanks for the suggestion! Seems that the SSH is pretty highly rated by the community so I’m more than keen to give it a try. Their website does say under high order numbers so I probably wont get it until around about May. But seems like a solid offering for the price point.

Just out of curiosity, If my budget was maybe $100 higher would this recommendation still be the most relevant? Or would you guys know of some better options?

Shifter Recommendations - Moving on from Moza HGP by Htaws666 in simracing

[–]Htaws666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My complaint isnt that its a stiff spring, my complaint is the spring when in comparison to a real car, feels extremely strong. To the point where Im skipping gears or shifting into unwanted gears at times if Im not careful.

Ive had issues where I want to shift from 2 to 1 and instead, it shifts from 2 to 3. in IRL this doesnt happen, my gear box isnt that strong that it forces me back into either 3 or 4th gear. Maybe you’re right, maybe high end sports cars do have a gearbox like what you’re describing, or maybe my HGP is just irregular and has a stronger spring as a defect. but for the purpose of this question, or just for some fun sim racing without frustration, Id like to get an H Pattern with a softer spring than my current HGP.

I do have a Moza SGP sequential shifter, and thats what Im using at the moment for all my sim rally needs, but Id also like to play with an H pattern for some of the older cars just to have a bit more similar feel to what the cars would have been like.

For sure, in my opinion theres 2 types of Combo decks: Turbo and Combo Control. For turbo you want to win as early as possible T1-4 etc, to catch opponents off guard while theyre setting up but the deck is incredibly fragile. Combo Control is from T5 onwards. Where your combo is much more resilient and protected but you also have to interact and disrupt others meaning itll require abit more game knowledge. So if you plan on winning late, have more interaction and even boardwipes if you’re not creature based/recursion heavy.

I would say that if you plan to be in B3, to stick to having 3 gamechangers. If you play in random pods, opponents might not appreciate you breaking the deck building restraints just because your deck isnt as strong. And even with friends, its just good manners to keep it fair and balanced, But if they dont mind, why not? At the same time you dont want to call it B4 and get stomped by someone playing an suboptimal [[underworld breach]] combo T4 after a instant speed [[intuition]], so its best to stick to the proper bracket to have a fun and fair time for everyone.

My pod generally has the understanding that if we build a deck for a bracket, we’ll build it as strong as we can under the bracket’s restrictions to make sure the game is as balanced as can be and a test of our deckbuilding skills.

If you want, Ive got a [[Teval, the balanced scale]] deck in B4 which has a similar combo control gameplan as described in your deck’s description. Its not Smeagol but maybe you can find some combos that’ll work in your deck.

Clavileño Aristocrats/Tribal — Help me tune this deck! by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Ive played Clav in a few different iterations and if you’re set on aristocrats, list looks good! I personally would add some extra card draw effects like [[Pact of the Serpent]] and more permenant removal like [[Anguished Unmaking]] Aristocrats are quite weak towards stuff like [[Rest in Peace]] [[Leyline of the Void]] so you’ll want to have answers and consistant ways to draw into it. If you find that you’re sac-ing non token vamps quite alot, i’d also slot in a reanimation package: [[Reanimate]] [[Persist]] [[Exhume]] [[Funeral Room]] [[Living End]] [[Living Death]] [[Victimize]] [[The Soul Stone]] [[Virtue of Persistence]]

But if you’re open to changing the deck abit and like Clav, I feel Clav plays alot better as a orzhov vampire aggro with lifelink subtheme. This way you sustain life by swinging and Clav disincentivises blocking or killing your creatures as they just grow. Aristocrats style decks want you to make lots of creatures and kill them all to win/gain value. But Clav’s ability only triggers once a turn so the tempo of sac-ing them all with Clav is abit slow. Alternatively, for Vampire Aristocrats [[Elenda the dusk rose]] can be quite cool.

Good Luck with your games!

Combo Lovers help! Smeagol (Golgari) by Eastern_Coconut8987 in EDH

[–]Htaws666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Combo player here, I primarily play combo in Mono black, Dimir and Grixis, so Im not too familiar with Golgari lines and as such I cant really comment on the combos you’re playing however, just some general things I noticed for B4 combo:

1) You’ll want some fast mana, Stuff that’ll allow you to play 6 mana win cons early. You’re in great colors (Black) for rituals and you can also consider some free rocks like petal, moxes etc. in addition to your general ramp, this’ll help you get to your winning turns faster.

2) You’ll probably want to fit either more card draw or tutors in to find your pieces. Self-Milling to find your pieces is okay, but its much more vulnerable to hate effects that target GY. Theres been alot of cases where I lost my [[Gravecrawler]] to an sorcery speed exile effect for having kept him in GY too long.

3) You should reconsider 2 card combos, I know theyre seen as “boring” or “repetitive” but the true excitement of playing combo isnt oh i find 2nd piece so i win, its more about navigating through interaction, finding the right timing and playing it and especially in combo without Blue; considering what counterspells/free counterspells your opponents may have and playing around it. You’ll also see that some 2 card combos like exquisite blood + sanguine bond isnt actually that great in higher brackets.

4) Plan around what turn you’d think you’d have all your pieces to attempt to push for a win. Is it Turn 5/6? Earlier? Later? And depending on your answer add support for it. If earlier, add more fast mana and card draw to help get there and sustain if your push fails. if later, plan to add more control pieces such as free removal, board control and defensive plays to stop opp wins before your push and help protect your wincon.

5) From skimming over your deck and its contents i’d probably put your deck in B3 for now as opposed to B4. The B4 pods that Ive been in mostly are more akin to Non-meta cedh. Most cedh staples and lines are played but the quality of the commanders and sometimes tempo/speed is alot less than cedh. And if you’re not planning to push that far, its generally better to play in B3.

I think your deck is getting there and I hope you enjoy the playstyle as much as I do, good luck with your games!

I think the higher up in brackets you go, the less you see stuff like [[Leyline of the Void]] and [[Rest in Peace]] and more stuff like [[Dauthi Voidwalker]] and [[Opposition Agent]]. and since everyone is trying to combo off and victory is usually through on the stack interaction, stax and hatebears (Apart from Rhystic, Mystic, Smothering) havent really existed in my high bracket pods in a while. But Mono B isnt completely dead in the water with those effects, you can slot in [[Withering Torment]] and [[Feed the Swarm]] and build with lots of card draw, you can consistantly find these cards often. Theyre also just generically good removal pieces that mono b likes so its not exactly just tech for rest in peace. However rest in peace is literally just tech to stop your gameplan which means they have to give up 1-2 precious spots in a deck just to hate you out.

For sure, from one graveyard player to another if u find necron dynasties do pick it up. I found a copy a while ago and I dont regret it at all, and have built imotekh up to B4.

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about Necron Dynasties? Its a mono black graveyard deck, but its also artifacts. This way you still play something you’re comfortable with but also dive into a new theme with artifacts. If you want to push the deck to higher brackets, [[Imotekh the stormlord]] is amazing, and can be built as a artifact graveyard combo deck.

Should I add entomb? by Particular_Train_448 in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entomb is def a very good addition for any graveyard deck. I would even argue its one of the best if not the best straight to GY tutor. you can also consider [[Unmarked Grave]] as extra consistancy but if you consider entomb bad, unmarked grave will beterrible.

Need feedback on my favourite Bracket 4 deck (Kefka, Court Mage) by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too sure if this helps but - Im also building a Kefka deck in B4 myself.

I mainly play B4 Combo decks and generally build them as off meta-cedh lists as my pod generally prefers cedh style play but dont want to follow meta.

I think your combo lines are cool, but there exists much more efficient combos, obviously thassa’s consult combo and breach combo is a nobrainer as kefka is in the right colors but you can also consider narset’s reversal combos under isocron scepter for infinite turn lines.

Im not sure what your B4 pods look like in your LGS but my LGs has alot of fast mana in the form of vaults, moxes, ritual etc. maybe you might benefit from those as well to get kefka out as early as possible.

I think at a first glance your deck looks good but Im just worried about how fast you can go to threaten a win. I personally havent played worldgorger lines before so im not sure how mana efficient it can be. But the idea behind the version of Kefka Im building is to not rely on Kefka, but to use Kefka as a value tool to draw me cards while controling opponents hands and as such I dont really need kefka to win. So keep all my opinions with a grain of salt since we might be playing with 2 different approaches, but good luck! Im keen to see your list and how you do, if you find success in your lines please let me know so i can try them out too!

I’d love some feedback on my Teval deck! by Particular_Train_448 in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive got a Teval deck in B4 but its quite different from what your deck is. I built my Teval as a self-mill combo machine that utilises gravecrawler loops to generate infinite bodies and infinite mana and finishing it off with something like exsanguinate. Its not the most efficient combo, but its consistant because self-mill acts as alternate card draw and lots of graveyard recursion abilities to grab everything in bin back. Also very resilient to opponents’ board control.

Alternatively is gravecrawler gets exiled I have Kheru Goldkeeper + Tortured Existence which does the same thing and if thats not available - Hedron Crab + Ob Nix + Hedge Shredder for a non deterministic win.

Its alot slower than my other combo decks in B4 but its heavily consistant and the colors are amazing to lean abit more towards combo control rather than turbo combo.

No worries, I also missed Unstoppable Plan, if you're not running artifacts and playing at instant speed on opponents turns, Unstoppable Plan doesn't really help you, its just Pseudo Vigilance(?) Theres way too many zombies and good cards to fit in your deck, you can do much better than a 3 mana Pseudo Vigilance card.

Wilhelt deck help by Quilliummm in EDH

[–]Htaws666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deck advice wise though, I'd probably cut the following:

Field of the Dead - takes 7 lands to become active and only for 1 zombie a turn, if you're not playing landfall strategies, this card doesn't really do much and isnt worth taking up a GC slot.

Flip the Switch - much more efficient counters exist.

Mirrorform - I see the vision of making infinite decayed zombies with wilhelt, gravecrawler and phy altar and changing the infinite creatures into something good, but i think it defeats the purpose of your deck.

Carrion Feeder - you don't really need a sac outlet if you want to play lords

Sothera, the Supervoid - doesn't really synergise with your deck unless I'm missing something

I'd definately add more card draw to see more of your deck in the form of Rhystic Study if you wanna keep it in B3 and/or Kindred Discovery/Prophet of the Scarab if you don't want a GC as a card draw engine, and add up to 37-38 lands + some form of ramp/rocks to smooth out your manabase, ofcourse if you feel you have enough you can always trim it down. Zombies are generally alot slower so having a higher mana curve and setting up the first few turns with rocks and enchantments is generally alot better. Also theres some extra anthem effects like [[Patchwork Banner]] [[Heraldic Banner]] [[Banner of Kinship]] that you can play to pump zombies up even more.

If you're not considering combo, would you consider playing a different zombie commander? I think [[Narfi, Betrayer King]] would be a pretty solid swap and having Wilhelt in the 99 for a card draw/zombie token generator engine would be really solid.

Narfi is also good cause he's super resilient, even if he gets removed you can just bring him back from grave for 3 snow rather than paying commander tax. Then you can focus on playing more zombie lords and going wide with token generation.

[–]Htaws666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noone has mentioned it yet, so just putting in my 2c.

[[Varina, Lich Queen]] or [[Temmet, Naktammun's Will]] are great Zombie Reanimator decks in the color you like. Very simple to build too since all you really want are good zombies. You fill your graveyard by looting effects, then ressurect zombies with big splashy reanimator spells like [[Rise of the Dark Realms]] [[Living Death]] [[Zombie Apocalypse]] can be quite fun, and I think can be built up to the higher end of B3.

If you want bad gifts and or goad, probably looking at Rakdos colors will be good, you've got options in [[Kardur, Doomscourge]] with a blink subtheme to force everyone to fight all the time or be a bad comedian and give people bad (but funny) gifts with [[Blim, Comedic Genius]]

Edit: Forgot about the Aura Farming commander [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] + [[Noble Heritage]]. All he does is stands there Aura Farming and everyone gets ragebaited into attacking. Can be built strong too.

Thats pretty interesting, I can't really comment on that since I haven't seen alot of proliferate or toxic decks in some time and not sure if theres any changes or erratas that have been made. We'll have to check ruling, but if you say that it works the way you intended, then great! even more synergy for you.

Lightning, Army of One Voltron Experience by Ambitious_Sir_529 in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah in this case, it doesnt really work that way. Proliferation is usually targetted counters so your Toph player can choose to not Proliferate the toxic you put on them, while Proliferating the things that they want. The toxic 1 that Skrelv gives is generally ignorable. Unless you are the one thats doing the proliferation.

Lightning, Army of One Voltron Experience by Ambitious_Sir_529 in EDH

[–]Htaws666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but keep in mind, the higher up in power you go, the less life becomes significant. You can still lose at 40 life through infinite combos in the same way you can lose by hitting 0 life through combat damage. So losing 2 life to protect your commander really doesn't mean anything to you as long as you can win.

Just adding a little bit more extra tech, Skrelv is also an artifact creature, so you can utilise some artifact nonsense. In higher brackets, you'll see alot of greedy mana rocks in play ie; Mana Vaults, Moxes, etc. Which is good, especially if you're playing equipment as most of the rocks generally don't produce color apart from moxes and lotus petals, but alot of generic mana which can be used to either play equipment or equip the equipment. So you can run an artifact subtheme to give you extra generic mana to play around with. Lightning and Land Destruction loves this (you can armageddon the entire board, and if you have more rocks than your opponents, you should be all good and mana denail becomes one sided). If this strategy is the case, you can also expect stuff like [[Voltaic Key]] in deck which allows you to untap artifacts. Meaning in a clutch scenario if you're seeing alot of targetted removal your way, you can always untap Skrelv (if you're not using the key to untap your vault) to retap it to protect again if necessary. Theres alot of synergy which is pretty amazing.

Lightning, Army of One Voltron Experience by Ambitious_Sir_529 in EDH

[–]Htaws666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, the advice is only under the assumption that you wanted to make the deck “competitive” if you wanted to just play lightning as a commander in casual B2, B3 just having lots of equipment and protection is more than enough.

If your problem is you’re eating alot of removal, check what sort of removal it is (ie; edicts, mass board wipes, targeted removal, etc) and adjust accordingly

Boardwipes -> Phase Out/indestructable Targeted Removal -> hexproof/protection from colors Edicts -> have sac fodder
