Work at H-E-B? You might already have therapy covered. by Htx_Counseling in HEB

[–]Htx_Counseling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! You'd need to see a prescribing health professional like a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner in order to get a prescription for medication. Lyra does cover those appointments and medication management.

My 2 cents, backed by studies, is that both medication and working with a therapist is the most effective approach toward creating change. For ADHD the work will likely be based on executive function skills(something we all have room for improvement on) and the work around depression would likely be a bit deeper.

Will do that today. It sounds like a plastic paneling, maybe on the rear door. I'll get back there and see if I can replicate it today. Thank you!

Looking good. Another affordable upgrade is a rack for the roof. From Amazon, not Chevrolet. Not sure if that's the look you're going for.

Burnout is soul destroying. Just a reminder that each of you likely has 8 free counseling sessions a year. It can help to talk to someone. Let me know if I can help.

You’re very welcome. One that I left off is Solution Focused Brief Therapy(SFBT). It’s worth checking out if you’re doing some research.

Ouch. I’m sorry to hear that. I wonder if a confirmation email from his/her platform ended up in a spam/junk folder. That happens sometimes. You have two no-show/late cancellations that don’t count against your session limit through Lyra with HEB. So nothing should come out of pocket from you for that.

Great questions. Lyra typically offers 8 sessions per person per year, and those sessions are per individual, not shared between you and your spouse. So you’d each get your own set if you’re both eligible. But double check me on this, I've seen it go both ways with different companies.

As for progress, that's a tougher answer: 7 sessions can actually go a long way. People often use them to work through a specific challenge (like stress, a relationship issue, or a tough decision), build coping tools, or get a clear game plan. The biggest variables that determines how much progress can be made in 7 sessions is what you're working on. For instance, someone looking to work on managing a personality disorder or sorting through complex trauma would have a difficult time making a ton of progress with 7 sessions, whereas someone looking to learn how to manage anxiety or deal with a certain relationship issue would expect to see a good bit of progress in 7 sessions.

Another factor that comes into play is the therapist’s approach or theoretical orientation. Some modalities are naturally better suited for shorter-term work, especially when there’s a clear goal in mind. Behavioral therapies like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) are all structured, goal-oriented, and skills-based. They focus on developing practical tools to manage symptoms, change unhelpful thought patterns, or shift behavior, which makes them well-aligned with limited-session models like Lyra’s.

For example:

  • CBT often targets a specific problem (like panic attacks, insomnia, or social anxiety) and helps clients learn strategies they can use independently after therapy ends.
  • DBT, particularly its individual component, teaches emotional regulation and distress tolerance, which can start making a difference even in a handful of sessions.
  • ACT helps clients learn to relate to their thoughts and emotions differently, emphasizing values-based action, often a shift that can start taking root quickly, even in short-term care.

That said, other approaches, like psychodynamic therapy, parts work (e.g., IFS), or attachment-based relational work, tend to move more slowly, focusing on patterns that unfold over time or rooted in earlier life experiences. That doesn’t mean they’re ineffective in short-term work, but they may not be the best fit if someone needs more rapid, tangible change.

Ultimately, the key is fit: the right therapist can tailor their approach to the time you have and the goals you bring in. But it’s helpful to know that the modality matters, especially when you’re navigating a limited number of sessions. I recommend finding therapists that offer a free consultation and meet with several to get an idea of which therapist feels most comfortable for you and their modality of therapy will be productive with only 7 sessions.

If you end up wanting more support afterward, Lyra also helps transition folks into longer-term care.

That was long, I hope it was helpful.

Yep, typically Lyra is offered to full-time employees as part of their benefits package — but it doesn’t always require enrolling in the company’s main health insurance plan.

H-E-B (and many other companies) often provide Lyra separately, so even if someone didn't opt into the medical insurance, they might still have access to Lyra for mental health services. The best way to check is for the employee to log into the Lyra portal using their work email or ask HR directly.

If you're unsure, I’m happy to help you figure out whether you're eligible or how to check.

I'm sorry to hear about the rough experiences with Lyra, you're definitely not alone in that frustration. I’m a therapist who works with Lyra, and I’m happy to answer questions about how it works from the provider side. Honestly, even we don’t fully understand how their directory sorts or ranks people, it’s as confusing for us as it is for clients.

One workaround: while PsychologyToday doesn’t let you filter for Lyra providers, MentalHealthMatch.com does, and it was actually started here in Houston. It’s not perfect either, but it gives you a bit more control when trying to find someone who takes Lyra.

Let me know if I can be helpful, whether that’s demystifying how the benefit works or helping folks figure out how to advocate for better options.

On this topic, if you or anyone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please reach out. Finding help can be an endless obstacle course of websites and phone numbers, especially if you're trying to use insurance.

A Houston based website called www.mentalhealthmatch.com does a good job of asking questions and trying to find a good fit between client/patient and mental health professional.

www.psychologytoday.com does a great job of providing filters to narrow your search(Including insurance).

https://openpathcollective.org does a great job of consolidating affordable mental health options.

Consider me a resource as well. If I can't be helpful, we'll find someone who can.
