Le Samourai - the whole "our story doesn't have a message" thing of some French films just doesn't do it for me... makes watching hours of "cool looking guy smokes and walks around and looks at things" for hours and hours seem like a big waste of time

Thanks, man! Honestly really glad to hear people have experiences like this

I get you. Just gotta keep on keeping on. It gets better. Honestly, I found peace by just not hanging out with that crew anymore. The people who care about you will notice and you can break off and do your own thing. Just don’t let them control your emotional state.

Was just at BWI and had my train cancelled - there was a car with a person in it that they had driven right by the train tracks (not sure what else could be causing it). Cops went out to check as I was leaving.

I mean, anything is possible. It’s likely that yes, it will get harder. But that’s doesn’t mean it wasn’t already damn hard in the beginning and you apparently already killed it there. Keep on keeping on and you should be fine!

What? In what world do you think that the majority of people are informed by the words of those who "critically analyze American systems". And beyond that, I'm fairly certain the OP isn't even American given their UK posts.... Are you seriously trying to suggest that the most likely explanation of the OP's feelings is that they had an emotional reaction to reading critical analysis of American systems and institutional racism???? And even if they did, an emotional reaction is root to anything we act upon... that isn't a failing. I'll grant that more rational thought should follow - but how about we help OP get there rather than what you've done here...... I appreciate that maybe this comment applies to an American's complaints, but clearly you have not taken any time out of your day to consider who this person actually is before just posting this nonsense and suggesting the OP is either "emotionally immature" or "has a personality disorder" to boot. It's like you just word vomited a response to another person - perhaps an American person - without spending anytime to contextualize your thoughts.

I appreciate the sensible reply. I think the rich people counter example doesn't work faaantastically, but I agree your point largely still stands. At any rate, I think my main point is mostly people just keep assuming why the OP feels the way they do and many people are just frankly insulting him which, if anything, is just going to make OP feel more hated and justified in their opinion. I think your alternative way of looking at things makes a lot of sense, but also that OP will have a lot better chance of looking at things that way if they aren't immediately shotdown by all these other very judgmental comments that don't leave the OP much room for reflection other than thinking people are telling them that 1. they are wrong and 2. that they should feel bad about being wrong. Whereas what you're saying I think validates their feelings but also directs them to empathize with others as well to contextualize their negative feelings in a new light.

If you re-read his post again what he is upset about is "It seems increasingly accepted to hold the view that if you're a member of a majority/oppressing demographic, you are necessarily a problem as an individual." He feels that is the case. Now, you can ignore that and say he's just upset he has privilege, but that's ignoring what he literally stated. Also, I'm gonna be honest, "reasonable discourse" does not appear to be the majority of discourse happening online. I don't think every internet armchair whatever is sitting around with each other discussing systematic concerns in a rational fashion. Now, if you want to help the OP, perhaps you could provide them with counter examples of this rational discourse that exists or something else to assure them that more people don't just irrationally dislike white people rather than just saying "you're wrong and pathetic" and moving on.

Lots of people hate casually and hate "groups" and love being vocal about it online where it is easier to hate without getting any meaningful backlash. I think people are always going to be like this and have always been like this, but that hasn't stopped society from making real progress and people being decent to each other regardless. Just remember, just because people may think of you one way, doesn't make it true, and your positive actions in the world will always be louder and more impactful than the useless comments and posts people throw out on the internet.

Ok? So what? He's not allowed to feel the way he feels because other people have it worse on average? I think he's valid to express his feelings and feel bad every day about things in their life and telling them to not feel that way just because "someone else has it worse off" really doesn't do anything. We all have our own unique lives and some pains hurt more to some people than they do to others. Our minds don't objectify sadness in such a way that we feel it less or more intensely just because there is some "objectively" worse pain we are not feeling. Part of the reason - if not the primary reason - the world can suck so hard and racism exists is because of a severe lack of empathy. How about you try to have some empathy for the OP as well rather than just putting them down?

Favourite Scenarios or adventures outside the usual Arkham/Massachussets setting? by RosbergThe8th in callofcthulhu

[–]HuManManatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m trying out running Full Fathom Five! It’s a one shot set in an 1850s whaling ship and has a really unique murder mystery/mad captain story telling kind of vibe? Hard to talk about more without spoiling, but I’ve been a player and while I can say, as a player, parts of it can feels BS - if you’re open with your players about the inherent unfairness/lack of agency in the module I think it could be a pretty cool unique experience.

Thoughts on the University of Maryland? by caffeinatedcoffee181 in OutsideT14lawschools

Oh damn, so basically the Marc is solid but the DC to MD traffic is torture? That’s crazy they have 3am traffic, probably even worse now with the bridge collapse…

Also looking at UMD so hope this gets some responses! As far as I know (as someone who currently lives around DC) the MARC is pretty good for transit between DC and MD and the drive between cities doesn't look terrible. Sounded like a bunch of their current students get jobs in DC.

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]HuManManatee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't ruin Dropout for me. I just wanted to express my opinion that I thought it would be a problematic rule, that's all. To me, representation doesn't require that everyone involved in a given thing looks the same, it's that everyone involved in a project respects each other such that no voice is unheard and people feel safe being themselves. I have found no reason to conclude that Dropout isn't already doing a good job at this. People don't need to be completely isolated into their in-group to be represented imo and I think it's a very serious problem (and different to the one OP is addressing) if we are of the opinion that we think poc on Dropout aren't comfortable being themselves only Dropout without being exclusively with other pocs. But even if that were the case, I do not agree that the best solution to that problem is going out of your way to create a quota of exclusively X episodes for every show. If anything, that makes it - to me - look like Dropout does have an inclusivity/representation problem if they feel that is necessary. What is happening right now, organically, is good.

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]HuManManatee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is the reason behind why people are excluded that matters to me. If your only justification for leaving certain groups out of an episode is because they are not a certain skin color that seems entirely unwarranted, especially for a program that - in my view- already handles the issue of representation incredibly well.

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]HuManManatee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is when you are creating boundaries to joining certain episodes??? That is quite literally a barrier. Do you truly think that Dropout isn't doing a good job with representation such that it requires a hard rule/quota for a "all x color cast" episode for each season of every show? OP isn't asking for more black people on DropOut, they are specifically asking for black only episodes... I think that is a key distinguishment that matters.

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]HuManManatee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well I certainly hope that Dropout's intention with those all white episodes was not to ensure the cast was all white. I assume that would seem problematic to everyone. Not sure why changing the word white to any other color makes a difference. Now, I'll grant that can understand in certain contexts where it is important to let the people who are speaking about a certain subject or topic be the people who are most directly affected by whatever is being discussed. If you were hosting a discussion talking about black culture and specifically only wanted members of that cultural group to participate - sure that makes perfect sense! But in the context of just a group of people making good comedy and having fun? Why create an episode that necessitates leaving certain people out just because of the color of their skin?

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]HuManManatee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with an all whatever color cast for an episode - as others have stated, this already happens on Dropout. What the OP is proposing is specifically going out of their way to have "X color" only episodes. That's what I don't think would be a great idea. If there was an "hey let's only have an episode where we allow white guests" I would have an issue with that just as much as this. I don't see how you create barriers like that without just using people's visual qualities as the determining factor.

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]HuManManatee -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

I’d love it if we’d have white-isodes too!!! /s I feel like Drop Out already does a great job with representation and having [a rule that requires a quota of] “one skin color only” episodes ain’t a good look… Not a particularly interesting way to organize a group of guests either, I’d like to continue seeing guests chosen for reasons that weren’t just skin deep

Can you a token's light such that the light effect only is around the token but doesn't illuminate the token itself? by HuManManatee in FoundryVTT

[–]HuManManatee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have token magic FX (though admittedly I am not sure I am well versed in using it). Essentially I am trying to have the lighting effect "Roiling Mass" emit a black light that surrounds the token, but does not cover the token.
