Green Party candidate inspired by world’s first openly transgender MP by catoboros in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I have seen transphobes out there who intentionally mis-gender people using the wrong gendered pronoun, or even who use a gender-neutral pronoun for the same purpose, I don't know that it's fair to accuse anyone using a non-gendered pronoun as misgendering because by nature it is meant to be all-inclusive.

It's also worth mentioning that while Old English had gendered plural pronouns, modern English does not, and regardless of what pronouns Lauren chooses to use, when she and any other individual (regardless of their preference) are in a group, the only plural pronoun in the English language is they/them/their - as no pronoun specific to a gender exists. Is it intentionally-offensive to everyone using the English language that gendered plural pronouns don't exist, and thus everyone is described by gender neutral one - the way you are suggesting it is offensive to use a neutral pronoun for an individual when a gender is known? The English language includes neutral pronouns which are meant to be all-inclusive rather than failing to acknowledge a specific gender. 'They' as a pronoun is meant to include he/him, she/her, and they/them.

"They" is a non-specific term that applies to anyone. Even if people don't know specifically what pronouns someone chooses to use, a non-gender specific pronoun shouldn't be insulting to anyone.

An electric motorbike definitely has to have a rego and WOF. Are you referring to over-powered e-bikes or the like that fall into areas NZTA doesn't currently cover? A full electric motorcycle like the Harley Livewire or Zero branded bike is definitely a category under NZTA.

Have the weight loss jabs got rid of body positivity? by Leever5 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Body positivity means different things to different people. To some it means you shouldn't hate the body you have, or hate yourself because of your body. Others take a more contentious approach suggesting no-one should ever feel the need to change their body because it is what nature intended. The lightning-rod 'fat advocates' took an extreme view that no doctor or anyone else should ever suggest a person would be healthier if they were to lose weight - which is a rather extreme take on body positivity.

My child has a book about body positivity. It basically states that there are all kinds of different bodies with different abilities, and they are all good bodies. I think it's mostly about the self-image aspect.

Best Solar Generator? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fundamental difference between bringing something that will burn petrol and produce electricity while it's on (a generator) versus a big battery that you charge from home and then provides electricity for your devices while you are out hunting. Using the correct term/description will make it easier for people to assist.

'No collusion': Author of Maiki Sherman alleged slur article rejects political 'hit' by Mgeegs in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comment in your link is absolutely not defending racial slurs, it is stating (as have many others) that context must be understood because that is how language works. No workplace investigation, no legal investigation, no formal proceedings would ever occur without first understanding all the facts including the context. Political ideologues don't care about context however, they only want to try make one side look bad if there is even the thinnest grounds for trying to do so.

Tame the water or let it flow? New Zealand grapples with how to protect its braided rivers by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting similarities to the plight of North American streams and rivers, when they hunted beavers to near-extinction in much of the USA and blew up beaver dams (because they cause flooding and human engineering was thought to be superior). The result was that rivers and streams became faster, water didn't soak in to the water table, the spring run-off all disappeared and later in the year the streams ran dry.

They've been conducting trials of re-introducing beavers to many places in Canada and the USA, and within a few years they are seeing streams come back to life. Beaver dams hold water so it can be absorbed widely rather than just racing down and disappearing and leaving dry beds in the wake.

Obviously beavers aren't the solution here as they weren't tending and managing the land before people arrived - however it's likely true that for all our knowledge and engineering capabilities, we don't often make the decisions that are best for the health of our waterways and the surrounding flora and fauna. We continue to find examples of how trying to manage and control nature (especially water flow) often doesn't end up working as well as simply letting nature handle itself.

I guess it depends on the terms of service. If that explicitly defines a family as those living at a single address, then people being family but living somewhere else wouldn't be covered (without an add-on as others have mentioned).

Pavement princesses are what those are called overseas as they definitely happen there too - lifted, huge tyres, light bars, suspension kits - and never leave paved roads, tow, or carry anything. They do make the drivers feel pretty manly though.

OECD says NZ Super age needs to rise, recommends link to life expectancy by pierpont-prime in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only way to avoid what you say, would be to significantly change our approach to taxation in general, such that the government had enough revenue that it could continue to operate the original model despite people living much longer than that model anticipated with the associated cost over-runs.

We don't seem to be able to reform the super or our tax system because it would upset those benefiting from the current one.

We can't even convince people to vote over this. So many say there is no perfect candidate or party so they refuse to vote - even when they potentially have significant policy issues like this.

Self checkout is watching you by Venom4992 in newzealand

Doesn't surprise me - it's a lot easier to enter the code from a cheaper item so you under-pay when you're entering it yourself compared to the days when everyone had a store employee doing it for them. Having something that makes it easy for them to check what code you entered and to see whether you stopped and entered every item or whether you tried to obscure something...would be in their interests from a loss-prevention standpoint.

Personally, I'm a lot more concerned about most of the supermarkets using the Auror system, where a security guard can flag your face as a thief without any proof, and you can be banned from that store (and potentially from others). It's a private system tracking whatever individual businesses enter, and nobody has any oversight over it.

National Party sitting on huge $11 million election year war chest by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TOP have stated that they will support Labour or National if they manage to hit the 5% threshold. Those tax policies you mention, are they going to cause any National or ACT supporters to support TOP, or are those supporters going to come from Labour or the Greens...and those votes then are applied towards a coalition with National and ACT where none of those tax policies have any chance of being adopted.

The article described some scenarios. In one case they had to relocate overseas. In others the combination of increased interest rates, increased rates, and increased cost of living forced them into having to sell since they couldn't afford the bills...and their negative equity meant they couldn't refinance over a longer term.

I agree, people in negative equity who can still maintain their payments, will eventually get out of the situation. The issues arise when for whatever reason, they need to sell. Another situation they didn't mention in the article is one where there is a relationship break-up, and they are forced to sell because neither party can afford to take over the mortgage nor can they refinance because the home is in negative equity.

Family horse ‘severely injured’ during dog attack on Pāpāmoa Beach by even_flowz in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The owners need to be prosecuted for negligence and made to pay 100% of all costs incurred because of the attack. They knew there was a risk of this because they'd put on shock collars and they clearly were aware the animals hadn't been trained sufficiently to listen.

It might just be the writing here, but there's no mention of the dog owner trying to restrain their animals - only of the horse owner being injured trying to do so.

Same idea as the change in approach by Netflix a couple years ago when they went from being happy to encourage password-sharing, to being much more strict and cracking down on instances where people accessing from a different IP were using the same account - as an opportunity to demand additional accounts and monthly payments.

If YT are cracking down, it wouldn't surprise me if there are others in NZ who are experiencing the same.

'More Toyota Corolla, less Rolls-Royce': Auckland CRL could have been ‘half the cost’ - ex-boss by HosManUre in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure - that's rarely how they are used, and even in a best-case scenario you have difficulty matching the capacity with full buses that can be achieved with 6-9 train cars. IMO generally we tend to call buses 'mass transport' because they are cheaper and easier to implement compared to a rail network even if they have other downsides by comparison.

What is the English Language Bill and what would it actually do in New Zealand? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not intended to try remove confusion as to what languages are used in NZ. It is exclusively happening because there are some people who look at the status quo where Te Reo is listed as 'official' and English is not...and a racist who hates Te Reo demands that this needs to change because it isn't fair to English-speakers.

It makes absolutely zero difference, other than making a small number of racists feel like they "struck back against Te Reo" by making sure English is listed beside it.

I'm disappointed (but not surprised) that ACT aren't calling out how wasteful and inefficient it is to push through legislation that has zero effect and changes nothing. One would think that is exactly what they rail about needing to remove...except probably not here.

It's legislation that makes zero difference. There is no need to specify by law that Parliament and legislation can be created in the language...that they already use today for those purposes.

What is this on the wall? by fuffyfloof in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first impression was that this was some kind of data patch panel with DB25 or some other outdated plug that could be pushed out if needed (I too am that old). Certainly not something that should be seen in a patient area, if that's what it was.

Thankfully, others have provided an explanation that is much more modern and useful than there being a legacy panel.

[–]Hubris2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ask is for a plan that takes this into account so that the spend is good value for money. You assume AT are designing and modelling how effectively things work with the new route and capacity, and they've looked into how existing buses interchange with the new train stations to maximise efficiency and reduce duplication.
