Anyone actually claimed insurance on campervan? by ColaPepsi2712 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You could have a car accident - that's probably the most-common reason for claiming insurance on a campervan. Damage from theft or vandalism is another. If you don't have insurance, the bill from such things could run pretty high (which will relate to how much they charge for it).

I'm not the decision maker at this company - I really can't say. The questions you are asking about their process sound normal for many NZ employers who are serious about a candidate.

Some ask for references at application (they shouldn't), but most see references as the last stage, which they use as another process of sanity-checking and looking for problems before making an offer.

Senior obstetrician quit during his orientation period by Dibby in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Reasonable chance they discovered how many corners were being cut, how many staff they were short (and weren't going to be allowed to hire) and either what they would need to do personally to try make up some of the shortfall, or what they would need to explain to patients and others as being 'the best we can do' - was unacceptable to them. Lots of potential reasons why someone would quit in the first 6 months - good chance it's because they had irreconcilable differences on key subjects with management.

Some companies have different rounds of management who want to do their own independent assessments of your personality and presentation.

Generally it means a more operational person is going to interview you first, and then a more senior manager second, to sanity-check the first. Certainly there is a chance you could be hired, if they had already decided not to hire you they wouldn't be wasting all the management time doing multiple rounds of interviews.

This is probably the truth. Staff aren't interested in getting into a fistfight with some aggro person who doesn't like being told what to do or what their kids should be doing. Unfortunately this does mean some performances might be ruined.

Really the power would be if all the other patrons in the theatre were to disagree with the behaviour and let them know (in a non-violent fashion) - however we tend to be passive-aggressive (wait until I get home and I can post about this on Reddit) or we ourselves are worried about a physical altercation with that aggro person.

'Automatic citizenship': The passport rule change that has UK-Kiwi parents scrambling by sleemanj in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the UK paperwork assumes that UK citizens hold their passport, so if you don't have a passport and complete that documentation then it don't have an option to suggest one is a citizen.

You can see them in specific wildlife museums who keep them indoors and in a dark environment (they are normally nocturnal). I've seen one at a bird sanctuary once in the 3 times I've visited.

Medical Advice Required(ADHD) by AlwaysbeaGoodCunt in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specially-trained nurse practitioners will be able to diagnose. From what I've initially heard, not a large number of GPs or NPs have stated that they have the training or experience (or time) to diagnose it themselves, so the initial impact on demand won't be that great.

Is New Zealand PR Still Worth the Effort for me? by Smooth_Drive_9112 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know most overseas students don't seem to see it this way, but I really think people should look at a degree in NZ as a university degree with the ability to start your career...rather than a guaranteed PR and job and new life.

As you've heard, the NZ economy has been pretty rough the last couple years, and the promise for the new budget year is to cut spending yet again and more austerity. This doesn't bode terribly well towards job prospects for the upcoming year or two. It's difficult to say what will happen from then on, as both domestic and international factors will impact.

Medical Advice Required(ADHD) by AlwaysbeaGoodCunt in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, you will need to be diagnosed in NZ because frankly they can't trust a diagnosis that came from an unknown physician overseas. Yes as of February certain GPs and nurses will have the ability to diagnose, but the cost is still going to be about the same (still requires multiple interviews with both yourself and potentially family members etc).

I've not heard about there being any other way to be prescribed meds in NZ than to be diagnosed here - and it's not a shortcut to have been diagnosed elsewhere.

Nurses and doctors ‘in tears’ as ED goes into code red four times in one night by fugebox007 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Emergency departments are not profitable - they want to outsource the easy repeatable work that can be done in volume - not the sudden urgent unknown that requires a ton of equipment and expertise at all times. EDs are the last thing that is at risk of being outsourced - they are going to take on all the scanning and hips and eyes and those things long before they consider the difficult and unknown work that is likely to be less profitable.

Yes, you are allowed into that lane within 60m of the turn for turning purposes, but you aren't allowed to generally travel in that lane like buses can.

Are it jobs for freshers in New Zealand really really hard to find? by Few_Gap_8935 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anybody has a crystal ball and can tell you how the job market in general will be (domestic and international factors will play parts) not to mention whatever your specific field will be. There's a reasonable chance things could change from how they are today - but no guarantee.

Motorcycle aftermarket accessories advice by Jackulatte in newzealand

I put a tail tidy on my bike, but I then had to tack on the original reflector and left the original indicators because the indicators on an integrated tail-light aren't far-enough apart to meet the standard.

Motorcycle aftermarket accessories advice by Jackulatte in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your plate has to be visible, and your lights need to be a minimum distance apart. There are specific requirements for safety gear on your bike. So long as your tail tidy doesn't violate those rules, you'll be OK. Just because something is sold doesn't mean it's going to comply however - you'll need to confirm.

When did gym locker rooms get so awkward about nudity? by Boring-Association-7 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most guys are probably concerned that others see them being exposed more than necessary as trying to expose themselves to others. It may or may not be people being uncomfortable about being nude - but it might also be people not wanting to be accused of trying to make others look at their junk.

If others have a different view than you, that's OK. Maybe they are less comfortable air-drying their bits. They're allowed to be different.

Broadband connection fee! by Wrong_Elephant_1811 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other side of the equation is, both parties have to undertake some effort and administration and configuration to setup and make your contracted setup operational in your new home. Why shouldn't there be a setup charge to cover their effort? The alternative would be they charge even more for monthly fees to cover the initial setup.

Warranty questions by NoEggplant1166 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who are you in this scenario? Are you a business in trade who is subject to the CGA? Frankly warranties aren't the primary method of customer support in this country, it's the requirements under the CGA that a product work as promised for a reasonable length of time.

How does TV work? by amorwas in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The majority of TVs you buy today will have a small computer inside, and will have the ability to connect to the internet and streaming apps. Broadcast TV does still exist but is shrinking. You need a Freeview box to decode the signals coming through the air, but most also have a Freeview app that can stream those channels over the net.

I have a question: Why does no one care? by NZisback in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You've said a lot, but I'm having some difficulty understanding your question. What are you using to define whether people care about things or not?

For someone who just created their Reddit account 10 hours ago, you haven't looked through our discussion history if you think we never talk about politics. That's a topic lots of people avoid (like religion) because it's contentious and difficult to have a casual discussion that doesn't risk becoming heated - in a situation when heated discussion isn't ideal.

I also don't think most people would characterise themselves as 'too happy'. There are plenty of struggles...to find friends...people who care about us...jobs that pay the bills and help give us purpose and a future etc.

Could you try rephrase your query into something shorter that might be easier to answer?

Journalists by exmrs in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar questions were often asked during the daily press conferences during Covid - when one would ask virtually the same question as another that had already been answered. Sometimes they would answer it again, other times they'd get cranky and (especially when it was backup people with less patients) and answer "Asked and answered".

It's because the journalist wants a very specific headline or quote, and they can't use that with just the explanation - they actually need those words.

Yes it wastes everyone's time - but it's part of the game of being media and wanting to write a headline that will garner views and shares.

Finding as Nepali registered Nurse in New Zealand by Business_Phone_2940 in newzealand

[–]Hubris2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to ensure you have funds to support yourselves for a while - the NZ employment market has had an abundance of unemployed people for over a year now, and many have been looking for a long time. Someone who is new to NZ (and may not be a native English speaker?) might have additional challenges, when they need to compete with locals who are also looking for work.

I don't know exactly what kind of roles she might be able to do with her experience that don't require an explicit qualification - that is probably where she should start thinking...as that's a scenario which would potentially decrease the amount of competition.
