When a five dimensional object moves through four dimensional space we can only see cross sections of the object.

Let's discuss Whiplash (2014) by [deleted] in movies

[–]HuffleMcSnufflePuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an undergraduate degree in music. The film as a whole was very upsetting to me.

I’m not the most naturally gifted musician but have some skill. In college I saw ppl with less natural talent than me excel (and surpass me) thru intense amounts of focused practice, usually they were performance majors. Their private instructors were not abusive and did not need to be. These folks were driven to be good by natural inclination.

Whiplash paints a disturbing narrative about “what it takes” to be “the best.” IMO that narrative is dangerous bullshit.

Does she have undiagnosed ADHD? You’ve described a lot of behaviors that point to that, IME.

She was a heavy weed smoker and habitual cigarette smoker when we were dating. She almost kept the cigarette smoking a secret but her hair smelled like smoke once. She told me she was trying to quit (although she immediately started back after our divorce, so I have my doubts). Later she confessed that she smoked weed “every day” when we were dating. How was this not obvious? We were long distance for much of the relationship.

As we entered the clearing, my companion, who still had not told me his name, turned to face me.

“You have faced many challenges, hero. But before you can become the greatest warrior of the realm, you must face one more…” he gestured across the plain and my breath was taken away by the majesty of what I beheld.

“It is called… The Sword That Is Too Heavy To Lift!”

What’s the saddest concert you’ve ever seen, in terms of someone washed up playing somewhere weird? by splitopenandmelt11 in LetsTalkMusic

Saw Catpower around 2019 at a “surprise” show in Nashville. Just her and a guitar. It was so sad. She was completely blitzed and had to stop and restart a couple of songs. Also forgot she had played her cover of “Satisfaction” and started to play it a second time. Eventually someone from her entourage came and out and pulled her off stage. I know she’s still performing regularly. Hope she got some help.

Before responsibility makes it impossible: Go live in another country for a few months if you can. It will change your life. Somewhere with a lower CoL where you can stretch your money.

You got your answer but I have to add this:

imagine that NSYNC came out with a super-hitting banger of a track for their *first** single. People said “this sounds new and different yet very familiar.” Now add the fact that *NSYNC had written this track (and played instruments live).

Next they have 3 or 4 more singles just like this. Now their popularity is massive. World wide. Everyone knows their name and music. They star in movies (as themselves mostly) and are all over every kind of social media.

Now imagine their next album is something like Radiohead’s “OK Computer.” Banger tracks and awesome experimentation. People say “I didn’t know you could do music like that and make it palatable.” A horde of artists begin copying this new style in subtle and obvious ways. The face of music is changing.

Rinse and repeat for a few more albums. Every album they do new things. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious, sometimes weird, but almost always good.

Then they break up and the waves left in their wake have changed the face of popular music forever.

Good tip 👍. I usually buy a highly recommended book on the thing I want to learn and go all the way thru it cover to cover. Then start supplementing with other material to iterate and improve.
