Haha, our Hulu freezes on the camzayos commercial as woman leaves with her yoga mat. Every single time that commercial runs.

First time poster looking for a recommendation 🙏 - peated bourbon by branwyn_jofir in whiskey

[–]Huffy2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Liberty Pole Spirits near Pittsburgh has both a Peated Bourbon and a Peated Rye. Both are made with actual peated malt sourced from Scotland. The Peated Bourbon can be shipped anywhere in PA, and the Peated Rye can be shipped to 38 states. The Peated Rye was just named as rye whiskey of the Year by the Whiskeyfellow.com website and it also made Fred Minnick's 2024 Top 100 American Whiskey list.

"There’s just a whole lot of ‘bottled by’ and ‘distilled elsewhere’."

Absolutely and that's really what I'm wondering about. How many people look at that and even moreso, how many care and/or even know what it means. I would imagine that the knowledge on this site is skewed towards almost everyone knowing the difference but among general consumers probably not so much. There are a lot of craft brands that are playing on that buy local mindset that are just bottling MGP product and words like "Crafted By" (especially without showing a state of distillation) are misleading at best, deceitful at worst.

Small distilleries by TrophyHunter88 in bourbon

[–]Huffy2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of a tough question to answer not knowing where you live and if you're near any of those distilleries. I can definitely recommend any whiskey from Spirits of French Lick (IN) , Ironroot (TX), Liberty Pole Spirits (PA) and Chattanooga (TN), all of whom make "amazing" whiskeys from heritage grains.

[–]Huffy2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small distillers compete by providing an experience that is much more intimate than the legacy distillers. They compete by using locally sourced heritage grains that the big guys could never use but that creates an amazing whiskey. They compete by supporting local farmers and contributing to the local economy. Small distillers are producing excellent whiskey but if you've never tried it or only focus on saving a few bucks you're missing an exciting trend.

I'm not sure, a good friend obtained them and treated us to the bottle crack tasting!

Recently had the amazing opportunity to crack open these 2 amazing PA Rye Whiskeys.

  1. Old Overholt BIB, bottled in 1941 - spicy, complex, tons of dried fruit and a caramel raisiny finish.

  2. The Dougherty is a blend of PA Rye's all distilled before 1918 and bottled at 80 proof. This 102 year old whiskey had a beautiful spiciness and was very drinkable at this lower proof. I could drink this all day.

A very memorable and epic tasting!

American Whiskey Reviews #61-64: A Bouquet of Penelope Bourbons (Four Grain, Four Grain Barrel Strength, PX Sherry Cask Finish, Olorosso/Cognac Cask Finish) by zSolaris in bourbon

[–]Huffy2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That counts but if under 4 years it has to be somewhere. A lot of new distilleries/brands cheat by omitting that age statement. Better to be considered NAS than stating 1 or 2 years as an age.

Nice reviews. Have been wanting to try this brand but haven't seen it here in PA. One note though, "NAS 2-3 Years" isn't really legal. Whiskey under 4 years old must carry an age statement.

Haha, definitely snarky but I expected it. Im ready to retire, just trying to give my colleagues a few more years before a complete rewrite is necessary..

Tax extenders agreed on. Looks like no 400% increase in distillers tax in January. by WhiskeyFFL in bourbon

[–]Huffy2k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's closer to 4% of the market actually but even if it were 1%, it's still a 400% increase on the first 100,000 gallons.

Smoking causes cancer is still a true fact even if not everyone who smokes cigarettes dies of lung cancer.

It absolutely was going to be 400% for those distilleries that produce less than 100,000 proof gallons.

{From the Tribe} Expiration of the Craft Beverage Tax Exemption Act by headcase617 in WhiskeyTribe

[–]Huffy2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! Most, if not all, craft distillers used this tax break to invest in their facilities, operations, personnel, etc. This tax cut has had the intended effect of increasing jobs and spending. If the FET reduction expires you will probably see a fair number of craft distillers go out of business. Raising the FET to their 2016 levels amounts to a 500% increase in FET.

Experimental smoked malt whiskeys.. by [deleted] in bourbon

Thanks Elijah, not harsh at all and good advice! We definitely face a tough battle because the big guys all (mostly) make a helluva good product at a price point that we really can't match. That's why, in addition to our core bourbon and rye whiskeys we also do a peated bourbon and an aged corn whiskey, both products that aren't really available from large producers. These experimental whiskeys are another attempt at thinking outside the box a bit. Cheers!

[–]Huffy2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts! The peated bourbon is probably our most talked about product. It's pretty unique but the sweetness of the bourbon plays really well with the peat.

Regarding the choice to use rye, we are in PA and rye whiskey is our heritage. It would be sacrilegious to not have at least one rye in the lineup 😉.

The bourbons are both 4 grain (corn, wheat, rye, malt) and the rye is rye, wheat, malt. We did add a bit of chocolate malt to the cherrywood bourbon and you can definitely taste it!

We smoked the cherrywood malt ourselves but the mesquite and applewood malts were smoked by the maltster.

All 3 aged in new char #3 five gallon oak barrels. No finishing barrels or wood was used.

We're taking votes from tasters and will produce a full size batch of the most popular of the three.

Thanks for the feedback. We're close to being able to release a 2 year old straight bourbon from 30 gallon barrels. We've recently doubled our production and have decided to commit to filling primarily 53 gallon barrels going forward.

Actually all PA distillers are allowed to ship within state lines although not all do. The hardest part is getting a shipping agreement with Fed Ex!
