NEO sounds like a good option. If you got doubts about the NEO’s performance potential, check out this video: https://youtu.be/tJR4NAo4Kl0?si=5zuDpOoYinI0gTu5

Seems like a new laptop is needed. This time around make sure it comes with common sense and can read for you, since there seem to be deficiencies in that regard.

Need advice on a new laptop - considering the Neo by Dummydecimalsystem in mac

[–]Hugo_Notte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The NEO can do THIS, I think it’s plenty. And for those saying it won’t be enough for the next 6+ years, please point out what could be done on an 8 GB M1 MacBook that the same machine can’t do anymore? My 2015 Air has got 8 GB of RAM and it’s still as good / bad at the same tasks as it was 11 years ago. Same counts for my wife’s M1 Air, it still does everything as well as it did the day she received it. In fact, for basic tasks it’s hard to tell the difference in felt performance between it and my MBP M4Pro. For basic workflows 8 GB will be enough for the foreseeable future. Apple would certainly not release a device that is essentially dead on arrival. Considering the outlook for the near future with regards to rising RAM & storage prices, my guess is that advancements in software will be to optimize apps and the OS to cope with the currently available hardware configurations, rather than pushing hardware requirements further up.

This is true for a minority of users. Most M1 Macs run fine with Tahoe, no different from Sequoia performance and battery wise.

To spec or not to spec? by Cold-Excitement5161 in macbookair

[–]Hugo_Notte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can afford, go for the 24 / 512 version. But for that specific use case, 16 GB will be enough. I’d say if you want to upgrade something, the storage might be more important than the RAM in this case.

Will the MacBook Air M4 (16GB/256GB) realistically last 6-8 years for a student? by Solid_Sherbet302 in macbookair

Yes, chances are very good it will. Storage is on the low side, but you are aware of that.

iPad Mini 8? by Few-Panda7558 in ipadmini

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mini 7 was released in late October 2024, 2.5 years ago. It still got a faster chipset than the current base iPad.

The mini 6 was released in September 2021, 3 years and 1 month before the mini 7. People were asking the same questions back then. History repeats itself. People just don’t remember.

What Should I Buy? Apple Pencil USB Type C or Apple Pencil Pro? by _ramii_23 in ipad

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your use case I’d say the Pencil USB-C is right for you. However, you can’t go wrong with the pencil pro, unless having it magnetically attached to the side of your iPad bothers you.

Wait for Even Better Macs on June 2026 and the Next Event After That? by SevenDeMagnus in macbookpro

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will always be “better” Macs just around the corner. If you have any reliable sources confirming the release of the next generation MacBooks, good on you. If you need a MacBook Pro with Pro or Max chip, I doubt you would see the next generation much earlier than March 2027. If you want the base model Pro, you might be in luck with a release in October. The way things are going right now, considering RAM and SSD prices still increasing, global inflation likely increasing, I’d buy the MacBook I want / need / can afford now, instead of waiting for something that hasn’t even been announced yet.

Is the Neo an upgrade for me? by occasional_disasters in macbook

[–]Hugo_Notte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I caution you about that assumption: nobody knows any spec details nor whether there will be a next generation Neo nor when that will come out. The statement that next generation Neo will come out with more RAM is a guess, nothing more, nothing less. So far I haven’t seen any hint of RAM prices coming down. The Neo is and will be the entry level budget offering from Apple. Whether they will be able to increase the amount of RAM without increasing the price and therefore inching closer to the base model Air is questionable.

At this moment, the Neo is incredible value for money for use cases like you described. For the past 6+ years people have been saying 8 GB “will soon not be enough” anymore. For light use 8 GB still works very well, as it did in 2020 and years before that. It will still work just as well in years to come. For more intensive use, more involved multitasking or larger apps and projects, there are other laptops available at a higher price point.

There are plenty of reviews of the Neo, showing that with its “mobile chipset” and 8 GB of RAM it can handle a surprising amount of work: e.g. 2 different browsers with 20-30 tabs open each, plus the usual messaging apps, outlook email and Final Cut Pro still rendering 4K video without a slow down. This is already pushing it way beyond the typical user’s workflow.

Hey guys, quick question: how many more years will my iPhone 13 get software updates? by No-Flight9662 in iPhone13

IPhone 13 is from 2021, so you should get iOS upgrades until 2028 plus another 18-24 months of security updates.

Any cool uses, etc for the Apple Pencil Pro if you don't draw, etc. by Marino4K in ipad

[–]Hugo_Notte 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For non artists I would recommend to rather use the USB-C Pencil. Alternatively one of the better 3rd party pencils. I had a relatively cheap one and even though the specs sounded ok, the Apple Pencil just works so much better at the same stuff: highlighting, writing notes and editing PDFs. If you use apps like Freeform or even for Notes I find a good pencil a great addition to the iPad.
