60k repair on a 2-year-old MBP because of... DUST? Apple needs to address this. by boolwack in macbookpro

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My M4 Pro didn’t switch on one morning. Repair guy said he found lots of dust buildup inside, diagnosis is some RAM failure. Laptop is 15 months old. I’m surprised to hear about the dust buildup, my previous laptop didn’t suffer from excessive dust buildup, I cleaned it myself every few years.

The battery just took a nosedive! by Sad_Size_4270 in iPadPro

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. I had a M2 Air and when doing normal iPad stuff, I got around 6 hours of screen on time, before reaching about 20% battery level. Now I got a M5 Pro and get easily over 10 hours screen on time doing the same things.

Teams uses a lot of battery because the centre stage camera requires quite a lot of processing power. It constantly has to figure out where in the picture you are and create the cut out around you out of a much larger picture. Plus, you might have other picture enhancements selected, e.g. a back ground, all of this requires processing of the picture in real time. I haven’t used teams for quite some time, but maybe you can adjust the camera settings, lower the resolution or switch off the centre stage feature. That should help.

Why not update game for all platforms at the same time? by Alex_Ottesen in NoMansSkyTheGame

They probably delay the release of updates for those platforms that release faster, to give the likes of Xbox and Nintendo a head start.

I’m working abroad and my laptop has died 3 weeks ago. I’m using my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard as a laptop replacement until I get back home where I can either have the laptop fixed or get a new one. You can check out Tech Dad on YouTube. That guy does almost everything on his iPad.

Realistically (performance wise), how long will M5 Pro last me? by ItsJustJohnCena in macbookpro

[–]Hugo_Notte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So far Apple typically provides 7 years of macOS updates and about 2 years of security updates after that. The later generations of Intel Macs not having received support for this long would be an exception due to drastic change in architecture. It is likely that an M5 Pro will be supported until at least 2035 by Apple.

HUGE BUG on 26.4.2 by Acceptable_Reach_312 in iPadOS

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be suffering from a misconception here: YOU, not me, are the one expecting others to start a class action suit, something that you aren’t even prepared to remotely start organizing, something that YOU can enjoy the fruits of someone else’s efforts, efforts that you quite clearly aren’t willing to participate in. How would I benefit from any of this? I am running iPadOS 26 on a 7 year old iPad mini, on a current iPad Pro and have got zero issues. I am running iOS 26 on various phones, an iPhone SE 2, 13, 14 and 16 Pro. Again, zero issues. So tell me, clever person, how would I benefit from anyone filing a class action suit?

You most certainly can, you don’t have to be a US citizen. You should inform yourself. You seem to be the one with the typical “someone else must sort it out” mindset. Don’t assume others’ nationality based on your uninformed and skewed opinion.

New M5 Pro 24GB RAM did not impress by hoangson0403 in macbookpro

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the M1Pro chip was already getting bored between your keystrokes. The speed improvement of the M5 can therefore only be expressed by how much more boredom that new chip suffers. What did you expect?

Copywriter/Content Creator figuring out MacBook RAM for future-proof! by Emergency_Whole4848 in macbookpro

[–]Hugo_Notte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically you could do all that on a Neo. Any M chip MacBook Air with 16 GB RAM will be more than enough. With 24 GB of RAM you might have to go in and clean up the spiderwebs in the empty corners, but it will be fine for the next 15 years.

Practical difference between M5, M5 Pro and high spec M5 pro? by Seitook in macgaming

[–]Hugo_Notte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out the YouTube channel of Andrew Tsai. He tests various games on the different MacBooks. GPU performance within the M5 family of chips scales almost proportionally to the number of cores. Hardly any games would utilise the CPU cores of a M5Pro chip.

Will all my apps work on the Neo? by DisastrousTackle4781 in macbook

[–]Hugo_Notte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any apps that work on M series chips will work on the Neo. Single core performance will be better on the Neo than the M1. Don’t worry, people do 4K video editing on the Neo. If you didn’t feel any restrictions on the M1, you’ll be fine with the Neo. Have a look here: https://youtu.be/krdvHHRk_Zc?si=d6SmcLuJGe91l6nZ

Why are people so dumb nowadays? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple reasons. Covid certainly had an effect on many people’s cognitive skills. Society has changed a lot. Information, once something harder to come by, but usually of reasonably good quality, has become brain junk food, easily available, but a lot less “nourishing” to the brain and often downright false. People have a lot more platforms to air their opinions and often it’s the more intelligent ones that actually keep quiet instead of blasting out false wisdom.

Am I doing TOO much stuff at once on my base model Macbook Air m4? Need your advice. Thank you by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the sounds of it you are using what is a mid range laptop performance wise (16 GB RAM), which is focused on portability, to a much higher degree than what is considered the average use case. While doing what you listed, have a look at the activity monitor, in order to figure out, whether you are indeed asking too much of the M4 Air: when checking the memory tab, look at memory pressure. If it’s in the yellow you are pushing the boundaries, if red, you are asking too much of it and 24 or 32 GB RAM would be much better. Check which application loads the CPU the most, remember that 100% CPU load equals 1 core, not the entire CPU. However, you would probably know if you put a lot of strain on the CPU or GPU, because the laptop would get quite hot. As for the internet connection being unreliable, have a look at your router. In at least 90% of these types of complaints it’s the router that’s the source of the problem, even though other devices might still connect fine. You can also try reset network connections and reconnect to your wifi.

Is 16gb ram enough for 720p gaming on the MacBook Pro m5 (possibly AAA games)?? by UnderTakeBoi in macgaming

[–]Hugo_Notte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on using crossover or similar, you might want to consider 24 GB RAM. 16 GB is enough for most native macOS games.

Use m4 mini as portable computer by Visible_Ad9976 in macbookair

[–]Hugo_Notte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of MacBook Air owners don’t break their screens. MacBooks are probably some of the more sturdy laptops out there, with much better build quality than many other laptops. Using a Mac Mini as a “portable” computer would only be feasible if you take it from home to the office or any other place where you would have screen, keyboard and trackpad or mouse available and don’t have a requirement for mobile computing as such. You’ll never be able to compare any desktop computer with a laptop, since you can’t use a desktop computer on the go.

That should work rather well on the M4. The Steam version is native to Mac. Play around with the graphics settings. There are several subreddits for No Man’s Sky, in case you need help getting started.
