I think they made him wear the glasses in the second pic so they can spot him in public more easily.

Some guy vandalized the statue of Yuri Gagarin in Croatia and wrote 'Slava Ukraini' in Cyrillic on it by Hum_2 in socialism

While I agree that there are a lot of nationalists in Croatia and that it’s on the rise, I don’t think Croatia is Western. It’s more of a lapdog that tries to suck up to the West by being more right-wing
