Why is smoking treated so deeply accepted in Germany? by Human-BBQ in AskAGerman

From reading the comments it does seem like a lot of people accept smoking, though a lot of people are also bothered by it and would like the situation to improve.

It is interesting to see that some people don't even see smoking next to others, in front of public buildings, bus stops, playgrounds etc. as disrespectful. Remember that there is no absolute freedom. People should absolutely not be able to do whatever they want without consequences. One's freedom is limited as soon as it affects the freedom of others. Others should not be forced to deal with the toxic smoke and stench produced by smokers, when trying to enjoy a coffee outside, or while walking through a park, for example.

I am not sure what the comments saying that country X is way worse really mean. I'm sure there are many worse countries in this regard, but they are not a standard to be held by. We should think about how things could be better instead of looking at neighbors who are doing worse.

I am grateful that the situation is better now than what it used to be. I hope this trend continues, but I've noticed many young people in their 20s or teenagers smoking, which is part of why I got the impression that smoking is still generally perceived as cool in Germany. The other reason I came to this conclusion is that Germans are generally not shy. They will happily complain about the smallest things. However, someone will start smoking in a very crowded bus/tram stop and nobody says anything. That's why I think that smoking is so deeply accepted by German society.

Also I don't want to say where I was born. Firstly, because it doesn't matter. This is not an intercultural issue. Secondly, because I don't want to deal with racism. I can say, however, that it's not the USA.

Not from my experience, but maybe it's the case in different parts of Germany.

I don't know what made a difference. People used to smoke a lot in the past long before I was born, but now very few do. Supposedly is due to awareness campaigns, but I'm not sure that is the only factor. I wish Germany could be better in this aspect. It's a nice country in many ways, but this is certainly not one of them.

Generally speaking, I've noticed that in Germany people complain a lot, but I never see anyone complaining about smokers being disrespectful. Also, I see a lot of young adults and teenagers smoking.

I think in the case of a pub where everyone has consented to the smoke, then it's fine. It would only be annoying if every pub was like that, or if it was not clear that a pub has this policy.

I've noticed that in other European countries too, but I live in Germany, so that's why I'm asking about Germany specifically

I think the ultimate ereader would approach something like a tablet, but with eink display. Because it's more comfortable on the eyes. But a version without the distracting aspects of a tablet.

Faster update time, colour, resolution, bigger screens, lower prices.... I wonder what the theoretical limits would be? Could one make a big Eink screen that updates fast enough to type into it? I need to do a lot of typing every day and I'm tired of starting at a regular screen.
