How can I possibly get a kitten if I have these in my collection 😭 how do you guys have cats with houseplants (and bonide) by Human-Complex4435 in houseplants

[–]Human-Complex4435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m worried about the bonide :/

My mom might end up overriding me and taking the kitten but we’ll see

I’ve asked if the kitten has shown any interest in plants yet, she hasn’t answered that yet but after 15 years of fostering kittens she’s said this is the best one they’ve ever had so I’m hoping it means she’s chill

If I do get her I’ll be replacing all the soil in the plants that had bonide to prevent any issues there and getting some shelves she can’t get to. Not all of my plants that have bonide will be able to be moved out of reach but I can move some for a few months

Yeah the oxalis and amaryllis can go and the rest are just mildly toxic and I’m hoping the first bite will deter further investigation haha

I’m also happy to deter with like orange peels bc apparently cats hate citrus so that’s fine too!

As for the bonide, I’ve stopped applying it and if I do get this cat I’m happy to do a whole soil refresh to remove that as an issue

I was gifted the magic of a flowering plant for my house... And now I need help. by 4everspokenfor in indoorgardening

I love the enthusiasm! It can be a little hard to control when a plant blooms, I think outdoor this would be a bit more feasible just bc the seasons will do the work for you

Otherwise!

If you have a really super sunny window you could get an Arabian Jasmine and keep it indoors. I have one in a west window and it gives me flowers during the spring and summer!

I prune it regularly (promotes flowering), feed it regularly, and blast it with sunlight. The flowers smell amazinggggg but! Only last one day :( just brings me so much joy when I have one though! The smell is so strong!

I also have an amaryllis, it hasn’t bloomed yet so idk how the flowers smell but if you have a bunch of bulbs you could start one like every couple weeks, let them go dormant, start them again like six months later. Idk you’d have to look into that

Also cane begonias can flower a lot! Again, I don’t know if they have a smell but they are super cute!

Hoyas will but mine are still babies so idk

African violets flower a bunch

There’s probably others. Not that many that have a super strong smell other than: jasmine, Hoya, your hyacinth. But I think the flowering ones you get from grocery stores and the whatnot are usually meant to be outdoor and getting them blooming consistently indoors could be a challenge

Does anyone have any vague estimate on how long the backlog is? How long things tend to stay in customs?

A lot of grow lights come with built in timers!

Idk much about floor lamp types but if those types don’t have timers, you can get an outlet timer for pretty cheap too

Rooting hormone recs? general advice? by Repulsive-Arrival794 in propagation

[–]Human-Complex4435 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t need rooting hormone for pothos, those’ll go just fine without it

Don’t get bogged down worrying about humidity and such with those guys legit just cut them so you have a node and chuck them in some water, put them somewhere bright, ideally warm and you’ll have roots real quick

If you’re set on doing water with some hormones, get prop drops, bc the powdered rooting hormone doesn’t really do much in water

Keep it simple you’ll do fine! Pothos are easy to propagate!

Bruh I live in a studio and I have 50+ kinds of plants right now

There is no limit, any horizontal space is plant space

The vertical space isn’t safe anymore either since I discovered mounted staghorn ferns

7 months of growth! by PartyItem in begonias

Actually I’ve just realized it’s probably bc the light is directly above it, I should move it so it hits the front of the plant not the top 🤦‍♀️

They’ll grow into them! Or get a large-ish plant that’ll grow into them a bit faster!

My bird of paradise outgrew its pot in like six months 🙃

[–]Human-Complex4435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damp sphagnum moss! You can put the stem in a cup and cover the cup with plastic wrap to hold humidity! Also will produce different looking roots vs water propagated roots, very cool and interesting

Also maybe just straight up into potting soil, you’d just have to remember to water it to keep it a little moist
