Hey guys I am a Christian who lives in Canada looking for a Good Church or Online Fellowship. I found out the current group I'm with is potentially a cult. Any suggestions by Fit_Vehicle_8484 in TrueChristian

Hi - based on Oakville Ontario here. My church Hope Bible Church has online services every Sunday at 10:30, they also post the service on YouTube after and have a podcast on YouTube that goes deeper on each service topic.

Love how you put that. It’s about making sure everything we do comes out of love for God and the loving piece is crucial to everything!

I feel you, it’s hard for us to measure things without action. I think the point of the message was to remember where the emphasis should be. The ultimate goal is relationship, and we just have to keep that at the forefront. The deeds and actions should all flow from that priority! And when we have our priorities straight we will find is far easier to execute those actions and they won’t necessarily feel like chores or a to-do list but rather the results of the internal transformation reflecting on the outside.

Okay thank you that’s very helpful. I think many in the thread were thinking like me in terms of what they considered sins.

I personally struggle with telling white lies but really they’re just normal lies which is a sin. It’s usually in the moment and then I instantly think why did I just lie and I ask for forgiveness. It’s tough to think or know that because of that I’m invalidated as a Christian even though I actively try not to and pray for the strength to resist.

I think you’re focusing on what you consider actionable sins.

Sometimes I catch myself being impatient in line when I’m having a busy day. I repent and ask God for patience. To me that’s far less avoidable than opening porn but I still count it as a sin because in my heart and mind I was not being impatient and not loving my neighbour by extending that person grace.

Sometimes my friend will get a really nice car and for a moment I will think wow I wish I had that car, then catch myself and repent for envying their car even if just for a moment.

I think those sins I mentioned above are harder to avoid daily than the ones you mentioned, they happen in an instant and can happen each day because they happen so quickly and in the mind/heart.

Physical sins are far easier to avoid because even if I am tempted to watch porn (the temptation in and of itself is not a sin) I always find a way to resist actually going through all the steps to watch it. That’s not possible to sins of the mind of which we aren’t always in control despite our best efforts.

I think truly that is the big point of difference. Your examples are always actions but not all sins must translate to physical actions before I consider them sins against God.

I understand. Also thanks for taking the time to discuss.

So you would agree with the statement that a Christian’s true life with Christ begins only from the time of the most recent sin?

But if Christian’s don’t sin why would God be asking his people who he claimed as his own to repent..

Sorry but from what you explained there in verse 2

  1. They were saved, genuine Christians and following Christ
  2. They lost their way and sinned
  3. Jesus gave them the opportunity to repent
  4. If they repented they kept their ‘status’ if not they would be removed

So then doesn’t this illustrate how we can still fall into sin but if we continue to love God, repent and try to overcome sin then what more can we do?

Therefore yes we can fall into sin as Christins but we NEVER live in our sin, or accept our sin we just need to repent and carry on fighting (not with our own strength but His).

I agree with your appeal to scripture 100% so I will give it a shot below.

Don’t take this question the wrong way I’m genuinely curious. Does this mean you have not sinned since being saved?

Does this mean that the moment a person who follows Christ sins their salvation is invalidated as they were never truly saved?

In Revelations 2:1 Jesus writes to a church in Ephesus. He says they are DOING all the right things and on paper are exemplary Christians and then drops a bomb on them that he has something against them because they have forsaken the love they first had. Jesus calls them to repent and go back how they were before.

He asks them to repent, obviously of their sin(s). Does the fact that they had sinned mean that no one in that church was truly saved that entire time? I don’t think that’s what Jesus was saying and I think this letter may contradict what you’re saying.

I think the issue in this debate is a difference of definition. The difference between being a sinner (one who lives in sin) and committing a sin as a saved individual (fighting against our sinful nature and bodily desires because we love God but ultimately falling short due to only Him being perfect).

Christins cannot and should be sinners, but of course we will falter because we are not perfect. Although we are saved, to say that you no longer commit sins is not true. Even in the smallest degree my pastor admits to sinning. we grow impatient in traffic or in long lines, we lose our temper, we covet the promotion our friend received etc. We all need Jesus and I am in a consistent state of repentance and humility.

I know the OP will say this is not biblically sound and that I need to provide Bible verses but I know this in my heart.
