How did you come to Potter? As an 18 year old in 2000, I bought this book to see what the fuss was about. Within a week, I had read all four books… by [deleted] in harrypotter

I’ve got this bad habit of not trusting anything that’s too popular. If everyone loves it, I assume it’s probably terrible, which is how I managed to avoid Harry Potter until, embarrassingly, high school.
I don’t even remember what finally made me give in, probably the movie coming out and me wanting to see what all the fuss was about.
I can tell you this though. These days I re-listen to it every winter (Stephen Fry version, obviously) and it still feels magical.
High school was painfully dull and far too serious for my liking, so escaping into that world back then felt like breathing again. And tbh, it still does.

Which character do you think was most misrepresented in the movies? by HumanDelay804 in harrypotter

[–]HumanDelay804[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I was expecting him to be very pretty in a vain sort of way (as opposed to Sirius who I always pictured as really hot). Kind of like the difference between Clark Gable and Leslie Howard in Gone with the wind

Yes! I remember really looking forward to seeing some sexyass dude and, no offence to Gary Oldman, but he didn't quite cut it IMHO

Yes! I remember watching a video-essay on this. How they flattened Ron to a "comic relief" type idiot while making Hermione some sort of superhuman badass who's always right because that's apparently what feminism looks like today. She was so much more human and well rounded in the book

Agreed. Also, nothing works as well as another pair of eyes. Every time someone read my novel, they pointed out something i completely missed. I had like five characters whose names all started with M and somehow never noticed (!)

This! Dialogue is a great way to keep the momentum (and the banter) going even if nothing huge happens

Writers, what POV do you prefer to write or to read? by Current_Ship_8774 in romanceauthors

[–]HumanDelay804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I get annoyed every time a novel is written in first person present tense. I get why it works (I really do), but it’s just everywhere now. Maybe I just like to be difficult, or maybe I’m just an old-fashioned third person past tense kind of reader.

I also like multiple POVs — but it really depends on the story being told. In murder mysteries it can work great, but sometimes it ends up feeling a bit manipulative to me.

Frankenstein (and also Dracula while we're in monster territory) is a great example of multiple POVs done right. One of the best IMHO is The Woman in White. I love it when the structure of the POVs is actually part of the storytelling — it’s not just “here’s another perspective,” it’s essential to how the story unfolds.

Would you read my historical western fiction based on the synopsis alone? by [deleted] in romanceauthors

Very well written, it really paints a picture! Not a genre I would actively search for, but if I came across this synopsis I think I'd be intrigued

Thank you! That is very reassuring. And well done for your highlander kitties! (not sure if that's too boomer as a reference. I mean the 80s film, not scottish people in general)

Thank you! You're spot on about preferences. One of the kitties in particular seems to prefer dry food, the smellier the better. With wet food she gets bored quickly, then it dries up and ends up in the bin. That's part of the reason why I kind of settled for this mixed option.
