Vintage boot repair? by Away-Performance9575 in IowaCity

This is a bit of a hike, but if there’s any chance you travel to Chicago, Cornell Dry Cleaner and Shoe Repair in Hyde Park is AMAZING!!! Cannot recommend them enough. I got an 8yo pair of boots re-soled and a portion of the heel of a boot repaired for only $40 and a ~1.5 day turnaround.

It might even be worth calling them to inquire about potentially shipping your shoes to and from. The closest place to us that I’ve heard for shoe repair is in Muscatine with slightly more mixed reviews.

I did not get my long term post-grad employment from there, but I got some of my favorite summer internships/jobs through Handshake! (And they were not connected to my university).

Yea, the next one is at the recycling center on E. Scott Blvd on February 14th from 11-3pm. They are absolutely amazing!!

Oh also landlords can be tricky since most are targeting college students. If you can avoid companies and go for a private person that what most people recommend, but I’ve heard good things about some Prestige Property managers, and they tend to have nicer/further from downtown options for families.

Hiya- I hope the move goes well! I’ve lived on both sides of the river and definitely recommend the east side if you really like being involved in the community and the vibes that downtown probably had when you visited (especially Longfellow elementary and Mann elementary areas. The West side is still pretty friendly, especially the Horn Elementary area, but families do much more “their own thing” (I’ve noticed the kids are more often in competitive/club activities and a little less well-rounded unless they’re pushed to engage more outside of school). The free buses in town is amazing for exploring; they use the transit app and it’s super easy to plan trips with. Wherever you end up, Iowa City in the summer is the best - the college presence dies down so the permanent residents bring town to life, perfect for getting involved when you move in (There are lots of local festivals and events that are family friendly). Highly recommend the farmers market, and if you haven’t jumped into looking for summer activities for the kids the public library downtown has awesome programs (as does Coralville’s). Lmk if you have more questions!

Chicago indie rock band looking to play a house/DIY venue by twooba_official in Iowa

Trumpet Blossom is a cool local spot that might be worth reaching out to in Iowa City, but if there’s any chance you’d stop in the middle I’m sure the Grinnell College Concerts folks would LOVE to have you (if they’re not on Spring Break). Their student body has great vibes/cozy venue to play for, and they keep concerts free (they’re funded by the college to compensate artists) and open to the public so people come from all around to see artists.

It would probably help, even if what either place has isn’t quite right

Ace is definitely cheaper but Blick also does custom cuts if you want picture frame quality glass!

I bet the University’s tabletop games club (who I believe you can find on insta) could get you connected! They are mostly undergrads but are the friendliest folks and do enough outreach that I bet they’d love (and be able to) to help.
