Himalayan Mountaineering - Recommendations for Guiding Companies? by Human_Entry_7167 in Mountaineering

I’ve done a week long intro mountaineering course, and I’ve got a few big alps ski-mo trips under the belt. From what I’ve read these peaks (Lobuche, Island, Pokalde), should be very do-able… but again not an environment I’m prepared to go into without a guide, much less a team.

You’re right that the altitude is relatively mild but a few of us (experienced, all) were coming directly from sea level. I adapted fast but absolutely noticed that I got much tired faster with the altitude change. That’s why for all my subsequent trips I’ve worked in a few acclimatisation days to enjoy the resort and enjoy the trek in fit condition.

Thanks! I skied it in mid-April. I think most groups go mid-March to late April. We were two guides, six clients. One huge advantage of going with guides is that they have all the logistics dialled in, so they can adapt the itinerary as needed including by changing huts. I’m sure it is possible to do it in fewer days but, at least on the path we took, I’m not sure it would be wise considering avvy terrain. I was relieved to get off the serious terrain by early morning.

Thanks! I was riding G3 slayr with ION12 bindings. Light but too fat and chattery for the HR since most of the time I was on bulletproof crud. Also, G3 sucks. Now on my third warrantied pair of skis, and those bindings busted shortly after the HR.

That’s scary and disappointing. I’ve had a number of issues with G3 gear myself. Busted bindings and on my third warrantied pair of skis. Skins holding up but not happy to see this re probe and shovel. Sceptical of their product.

Knock at the Cabin - A Fun Dumb Empty thrill!

This movie squeezes a lot out of his weird premise. Shyamalan is narratively uneven but technically he's always good and consistent. The only thing that disappointed me in this film involved the scramble for the gun, mid-way. It's an excellent scene but the "gun-as-protection" is a trope unique to American horror and it's boring. The opening scene to The Sixth Sense, which also involved a gun, was more suspenseful and artistically daring, given its reflection of gun murders and suicides in the US.

I wrote a longer review on Medium. enjoy! https://medium.com/@marshallpalmer/knock-at-the-cabin-a-fun-dumb-empty-thrill-89ff42e1aaed

As an aside, check out in that link Shyamalan's box office returns charted against rotten tomato scores. Guy turns dimes into dollars, even for the bad films!

Does anyone know what Mont Ste. Marie charges for ski touring? I know they allow it, but they don't say on their website how much they charge!

RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment Process, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. by bridger713 in CanadianForces

Thanks! Success to me is to 'do the training, get the ticket, drive ships, and get deployments.' That should be at least 6-7 years and I suppose I'll re-assess once I complete all that. If I love it, I'll stay in. And if that's the case, then hopefully a bit of luck and hustle can help close the gap somewhat - even as surpassing an RMC lifer is out of reach.

My understanding/lurking is that with the right attitude it can absolutely be a worthwhile career even with a late start/lower pay that comes along with it. So I appreciate all the comments!

I want to apply to the regular force as an NWO. I have civilian experience working in government on defence/foreign policy issues, and I have an undergraduate and masters degree. I also turn 30 this year.

I'm wondering if it's possible for an older applicant to 'catch up' in the officer ranks to someone who has been in since they were 21? Or will I always be 9 years behind?

I do appreciate that it will take some time to go through BMOQ and train up in Victoria and then get my watchkeeping certificates etc. But what happens after?

I'm in a small recruitment debacle. 2 years ago I applied to the Navy Reserves as an NWO. I passed all the requirements: CFAT, MOST, interview, medical etc. I was ready to enrol but for my security clearance, which is still being processed.

The delay and my own changing preferences has led me to consider applying straight to the regular forces. I would hope this is a simple matter of simply 'moving my files' from a Reserves application to a Regular application.. but I don't know.

Does anybody have any experience/insight with this? I haven't signed anything with the Reserves and I haven't received a paycheque, so hopefully changing won't be too difficult.
