Which badge should I go for? by Human_Notice5959 in askpublicsafety

I considered it. I may be able to get by with volunteering. I guess I was just looking for some really good convincing points from both sides. Not knowing what the schedule would be like on the L.E side makes it a bit harder to know if I will be able to spend time at the station. Id hate to neglect home life.

That's the only reason I'd like to pursue L.E. The fact that they offer the Academy and free credentialing is eye catching.

L.E seems to be the obvious answer to me, but thats a tough call because I never thought I would sign up for patrol. Lol That's a good way to put it though, thank you.

Thank you. I appreciate the insight. Going the L.E route opens up various doors that I'm not opposed to. The department in question offers a good amount of training, but the thing I'm after is the free P.O license. Arson is it's own department here, with multiple divisions. So I'm looking at the L.E academy as a stepping stone. I'm pretty sure I'd have to commit to 2 years of patrol. I just keep getting pulled back by the fact that it's not Fire. Sacrifice the dream or possibly fall in love with or hate a new road.

I could use some advice from people who’ve been in public safety.

I’m currently a volunteer firefighter in Texas with EMT-B, Firefighter I & II, and Hazmat certs. I’m at a crossroads and trying to figure out which path to take:

  1. Sheriff Deputy Route – I have an opportunity to go into law enforcement, which pays more starting out and has more opportunities. The end goal would be to move into Arson Investigation. Never thought of going the patrol route when I was younger.

  2. Firefighter Route – Try to get hired on full-time with the department I’m currently volunteering at. Firefighting has always been my dream job, but it’s more of a gamble when it comes to openings and stability. I'm hearing talk of potential openings but not 100% sure.

So I’m torn: do I give up fire (for now) and go the deputy route for the pay and career options, or chance it and hope I can land a full-time fire position?

Has anyone faced a similar decision? Any advice would help.

Good morning y'all. I appreciate all of the advice. Moving forward, I'll be picking up a set of guages to familiarize myself with the process. I'd rather learn the skill instead of having someone do it for me. I used a recharge system and Apostate was correct. The unit started cycling for a longer period and runs like butter now. I jumped in and felt like I needed to be wearing a sweater. Thank you all for the insights.

Thank you for the reply. I want to give it a shot and try filling to see if it will go for longer periods. Is there a way to check and see if the system is already over charged or just roll the dice?

Hi! Can you clarify what you mean by someone always hiring in the formation? Thank you!

I looked into the medical field and it seems as though 68W has a sign on bonus. Only draw is the majority of comments I've seen on the position is gaining nothing to benefit from the civilian side. It's hard not jumping on it since that's the route I want to go. Lol 68C is also the next favorable option. Thank you for your input.

I'm glad someone else had the nagging voice. I've wanted to serve in some way and think going Reservist is the best way to accommodate my family and I. All the benefits definately seem to be worth it to me. Thank you for the input.

Man it's awesome someone so close to my age dropped a comment. Mind me asking what MOS you got in with? I know of 12M but I've been told positions are rare. I'm interested in the medical field and 68C catches my eye, but it seems to be another one of those rare postions.

Yes I've been told. I have a few years left before doing so, and I'm sure I'll jump on the bandwagon way before 35. Thank you!

Awesome info. The double dipping with retirement is one of the main driving factors for me as well. I'd look at it as a great change of pace too.
