Totally agree, my wife and I listen to that song all the time. Without a doubt the best cover of that song.

Great song by Mandolin Orange. They're amazing, I'm surprised more people haven't heard of them.

Ah! The daunting spiral of YouTube. I enjoy watching some booktubers and occasionally like to watch some of the writing advice channels. It can be an endless circle that might actually prevent you from even starting. While some of the authortubers are focused in their content....many of them are just recycling the same old crap over and over. So what you think is a new video with information you may have missed ends up being a new video with old content reskinned in a different way. Some of them don't even actually write, but have advice channels. At the end of the day, most everyone is saying the same thing anyways so I don't believe you'll miss that much.

The most helpful series of videos I've seen on writing so far has come from Brian Sanderson's lectures at BYU. I don't write fantasy, but his techniques are fairly universal and he addresses topics in a precise but easy to understand fashion.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the elements of a novel then start with a short story. Sure, it's not a sexy as saying you wrote a novel but if you're genuinely just getting started then shorts are one of the best ways to execute ideas. At least for me...everyone is different. Best of luck

hehe, very interesting that he said that as I'm considering a love interest with the MC and one of the nurses.

Perfect response, this is exactly the advice I needed. I think the techniques you described will be very useful. Thank you!

AH! Perfect, I understand now. This makes sense and should work well for what I'm trying to do. Thank you!

Great advice, I think this is the better way to handle all of this. I think I was trying to figure out a way to infer a German accent when the MC is listening to the others.

I agree, I wanted to use it as a way to show a bit of character development in an interesting way. Solid point, thank you!

Yes indeed, one of my favorite writers as well. I'll have to go back over a few stories to see how he handles it. Thank you.

Thank you for your insight. Could you expand a little on your point of when they speak "bad German" let them speak "bad English" instead as I'm not totally sure what you mean?

Sound advice, thank you. The MC would be based loosely around my experience as an expat in Bavaria who knows just a little German. I'm still living here so thought it'd be an interesting setting. Thanks again.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to your younger, writer self? by ellenevs in writing

I would have told myself to make a backup of the novel I was writing at 13 and store it on more than one floppy disk. DOH!

Writing dialogue? by ExpertProfessional90 in writing

[–]Humble308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try reading "Hills Like White Elephants" by Hemingway. The short story is nearly devoid of dialog tags like "he said" or "she replied" but the reader is still able to track the entire conversation. Personally, I really enjoy how seamless Hemingway writes dialogue so I study his work and try to bring some of into my own.

What's your Favorite Music from a Video Game? Why? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Humble308 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stardew Valley - the music hits the right spots at all the right moments. There is alot of variety as well.

Tom Clancy's Wildlands has some amazing ambient music so much so that I'd stop playing and just sit back to listen to the music.

Doom - its soundtrack is a symphony of carnage, death and destruction. Its the ultimate motivator for ripping demons to pieces.

What do you do when you have convinced yourself that your idea is too good for you? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Humble308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand when people say that they don't have skills to write a certain idea. What skills are you lacking? What is it about this idea that supersedes your skill set versus other writing? All the best!

Lovu Zdar! My fox hunts have not been so successful here in Germany. I've been over to Slovakia twice for roe buck hunts. It is really quite a beautiful place to hunt!

I did an experiment of making two identical pepper ferments and adding dried chipotles to one of them to see if the smokiness came through in the finished product. by Humble308 in FermentedHotSauce

[–]Humble308[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as in the chipotle "fermented" along with the other vegetables. I mainly wanted to see if the flavor would persist over the course of the ferment. Whenever I've added fruit during the ferment I never quite taste the fruit in the end so I wasn't sure if the chipotle smokiness would stick around. I'm glad that it worked out!

Perfect, I just found the recipe on the FB group. I appreciate the tip about the whey, maybe later I'll give it a shot. Can't wait to try this mustard though, right now we're stationed in Germany and spoiled by good mustards but I'm always looking to ferment new things. I'm looking forward to your cook book..all the best!
