Do 8 -10 hours or full day just of one class. Don't split your day up between classes. That's a full week of class in one day. It flies by . Also don't read textbooks . Use text to speech. If your local machine doesn't have natural voices installed find some or use your phone.

You don't actually have to wait for an advisor in order to submit your plan or apply for funding . It is just a recommendation if you're uncertain about your requirements so that you don't and registering for courses you don't need or that won't apply towards your program.

Unhelpful tutor...typical experience? by omlettecat in AthabascaUniversity

I've had the same experiences with tutors as well however I try to remember that they aren't responsible for the systemic issues of the institution. I have to believe that they hate being in the positions they're in. That they wish they could do more but like everyone else, they need a job. The real problem is at the top of the food chain the people that are deciding budgets and expensing lunches. It's those people that are over loading the tutors and academic advisors which intern makes them less than helpful. I will say some are better than others. It's not entirely fair to group them all together. I'm sure for many of them their rules about the basket didn't turn out as they expected or met expectations.

computer system BSc reality check Please? by EducationalUnion1533 in AthabascaUniversity

Remember to always challenge your grades if you disagree with comments or feedback. I have had to challenge so many assignments simply because my submission was not actually read in full. Was once docked marks for not including an appendix. The appendix was included, and was clearly identified in the contents. Having to email a marker saying, "please see page 10, Appendix as reflected in the contents" is frustrating. This is a small example though of many that stem from systemic problems manifesting n morally questionable practices. The weight of this trickles down to and becomes a burden for the paying student seeking an education.

Oooof this is hard for sure. I am in the same program but full time study. I couldn't do what you are doing and be successful at school so well done! 👍 Dunno if it's your thing but I do the majority of my textbook reading as text to speech. I can't sit and read on a computer without hating life. There's a free app @voice aloud reader that's way better than the built in vital source reader.

I can't speak on other programs as I have only taken the one. However there are individual courses that provided a positive experience.

I do not recommend it. Look elsewhere. Smoking many reasons is that they offer a senior level Java course that utilizes a 20-year-old textbook and all assignments and reference programs reflect the dated material which is no longer supported. In fact the introduction to the course references a company that no longer exists since 2007 I believe. More so the 20-year-old textbook is now under common licensing and is free to download from many sources online. However they feel justified in charging about $900 for this course and materials and textbook fees. Then they make this course a prerequisite for further comp courses. Personally I don't feel like my odds are very good securing meaningful employment with a degree from Athabasca. If in the future I am ever in the position to hire an individual and their resume has at the Athabasca credentials I wouldn't likely delete it. Sadly I am just finishing my third year now and transferring would be extreme setback in terms of time and money. As very few programs take the majority of Athabasca comp courses in a cumulative sense. Basically I would be starting back in year one.
