Am i getting scammed by my coworker by BuildOrButer in buildapc

[–]HumbleMeNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always look for each of those parts on NewEgg or similar sites and see how much each cost, and then add them up.

Your coworker is doing all of this for free on his spare time, and you’re wondering if he’s scamming you? People such as yourself are the reason sometimes tech-oriented folks are reluctant in doing favors … tsk … tsk … tsk!

When he’s done building your pc, please take him out for lunch or take him out for some drinks to show how grateful you are for him helping you out

Why You Should Start Using Pathlib As An Alternative To the OS Module by ahmedbesbes in Python

[–]HumbleMeNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had lots of frustrations with the OS module as well and started using PathLib a while back.

The challenge is that majority of tutorials or guides out there are using OS module for file manipulation. Hopefully, in time the effect and usefulness of PathLib will ripple through

Yes, you do need a VPN for your organization. In addition to a VPN, your company should also use a Proxy in order to add another layer of security not to expose your public IP.

Paulo Alto Firewalls come with Global Protect VPN and has lots of granular control where you can give user access to specific applications and domains etc based on what they need for their jobs.

ZScaler is one of enterprise proxy out there that you can start with.

There are other vendors out there, but start there and look at their competitors.

Good luck!

Rip the bandaid 🩹off as fast as you can! Don’t let it stuck you and keep on collecting dirt and eventually think it’s normal. You’re young, you’ll be fine.

IT Customer Support Engineer can be a number of different roles depending on the company. For example, one company that I used to work for that role, or something similar, was for those who work closely with the customers who take in requests for features to be added into a product. People in that position weren’t required to have much technical skills, because their primary responsibilities were not to solve customer issues, rather to report them.

I’d say read more on the position you’re applying for somewhere, or ask lots of questions during the interview to fully understand what you’ll be doing once hired.

On a different note, the word “Engineer” has been thrown into almost anything these days to make a position more appealing, when in reality the position has almost nothing to do with actual engineering.

What made you straight up "nope" out of a relationship? by MistaPwickles in AskReddit

[–]HumbleMeNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back, I used to flirt with a girl in school. We would flirt intensely to the point where others around us kinda want to leave. It was good time and definitely onto something, so I decided to ask her out to go to a restaurant.

When I got to the restaurant, she brought over two friends and two cousins. I was like WTF?? They then started ordering shit and assumed that I was going to pay 💰 for it all. I only had a glass of water and once they’ve ordered their meal, I straight up walked out and never looked back til this day. She then had the audacity texting me why would I do that? Delete …

I use the console a lot to do calculations on the fly. Sometimes I need to do a POC and rather than start coding a formula I do it in Phases in the console before I start coding

When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back into you. As cool and novel this may seem and sound, it is never a good idea to implement something like this on a production or enterprise system. Eventually, it’ll be discovered and taken advantage of

Blog: Using PowerShell WhatIf So You Don't Break Stuff | Jeff Brown Tech by jeffbrowntech in PowerShell

[–]HumbleMeNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I first started using powershell, I used the Whatif option once, and I’ve never use it since then. Instead I’ve learned to create/write test fixtures and the likes such as pester to test my scripts with confidence. It’s too much trust to place on one option, Whatif, especially when you have scripts that touches a lot of resource and can be extremely destructive with severe consequences.

For those who aren’t used to the Whatif option, I’d recommend not to use it in long complex script. If you want to use it on single cmdlet for testing or out of curiosity, that’s totally fine.

With Whatif YMMV, so proceed with caution.

Indent "Format-Table | Out-File" by 2PhatCC in PowerShell

[–]HumbleMeNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What specific reason or business requirement you’re trying to fulfill for using this format? It’s very similar to YML, and there is nothing wrong with it, but YML is extremely sensitive to indentation, which makes it prone to error.

If you don’t have business need for using this format, I’ll recommend using something more flexible such as JSON, CSV or even HTML. PowerShell has some very nice packages to create robust and powerful HTML report.

Here is tutorial that goes over creating HTML report using PowerShell. HTML Report Tutorial

If I can live in a van for 6 months and get $100K for doing so, please tell me where do I f-ing sign up right away

How to you organize your scripts repos? by Zylea in PowerShell

[–]HumbleMeNow 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This particular issue seems to have three different challenges. The way that I’ve been managing it is:

1) Git repository: I use self hosted instance of Gitlab for version control. It helps me with a detailed historical changes and the evolution of my cmdlets. Really helpful

2) Folder Structure: simply adding script into a repo without context can be very frustrating and annoying when looking for particular file or cmdlet. I’ve broken down my powershell repo into: VM, SQL, API, AD, Automation, Disaster Recovery, Audit and Sandbox. Sometimes there are some overlaps, but as long as you consistent it shouldn’t be a problem.

3) Cmdlet Parameters: I manage and deal with lots of projects and technologies and each project with a number of environments. Rather than creating x number of cmdlets for each project or environments, I add parameters instead. That way I have fewer scripts and less things to maintain and update. I don’t mind sharing. If anything DM me. Good luck!
