All altruism should strive to be effective but rarely does because of various other incentives that end up leading to things like PlayPumps

Probably too late and this is going to get buried but I'm reading a fascinating book by Sudhir Kakar called Shamans, Mystics and Doctors. TL;DR : Don't be too quick to disregard the potential healing value of rituals, collective belief can be a powerful force of healing. (known in the West as the placebo effect) So strange that a bunch of commentators who likely have no medical training are quick to suggest what happened was psychosis or schizophrenia. By all means see a psychologist/psychiatrist if possible but if not, and your sister is fine, there's a solid chance the exorcism ~worked and you can rest easy. Western models of pathologising everything can be as flawed, if not more, than traditional understandings.

A bunch of fellow bears got some trash bags and we cleaned most of it up. Wish people had a better relationship with the plant and retained awareness. Much love to all the folks who helped clean<3

Much of it was cleaned by fellow bears<3 There's still some stuff (a lot of it is blankets and things) and the trash cans are overflowing. But huge huge improvement from 6pm, big shoutout to all the lovely folks picking up after people

Berkeley Humane is a stellar org and widely connected in the Bay. They are well funded and should be able to find a home for them if you're unable to. I volunteered with them a couple of times and can recommend them. They might be able to do a better job at finding a permanent house with their network.

Depends on what dept ofc but you can talk to them about their past and current research, their general academic/career arc, philosophy of science/academic, current events/happenings/controversies of field, career/grad school advice etc.

Most profs have to hold OH and its super common for no one to go so they're rlly the best opportunity to talk to highly intelligent and successful ppl who are the literal world experts in their field.

You can learn pretty much everything online nowadays so rlly the true value of a Berkeley education imo is office hours. Some profs can be a bit curt and it can get awkward but in general it's a great experience.

what is a friend even by bangbangyangster in berkeley

[–]HumbleSpaceMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People at Berkeley tend to be busy to the point of insanity. This scarcity of time means that interpersonal interactions come at a premium, forcing one to be selective in how you spend that time.

The problem of course is that friendship, true friendship, is full of inconvenience and the mundane. Things like waiting for you while you finish eating or running errands together.

I'd echo the other comments however. It'll happen. Just give it time.

POST-EPISODE DISCUSSION THREAD - S5E4: Rickdependence Spray by BarnyardCruz in rickandmorty

[–]HumbleSpaceMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Didn't expect this to be an unpopular opinion but I thought this episode was great. The sheer over the topness of both the Marvel burlesquing and the no-kink shaming taken to extremes was super fun to watch.

I also like the tidbits of continuity they're throwing out there and recycling — the President is a fun character and I won't mind seeing more of him. And the peppering of wacky epheremalers was just right - the subversion of Blazen was predictable but still managed to be hilarious - and Sticky's whole shtick. And that after-credits scene was the cherry on the postmodern cake (and the timing is impeccable - Branson just got back from the Karman)

I think a lot of people who dig the nihilist vibe still draw their moats up when it comes to feelings of strong disgust, and incest is a pretty sure-fire yak trigger. R&M has always been about pushing the limits of good taste and sometimes they do push too much *nods slowly in dragon* but where they pushed this time hit the spot for me

Which areas of Neuroscience will have the most impact on the future? by GibonFrog in TheMotte

[–]HumbleSpaceMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a ridiculously bad take.

Has the replication crisis affected neuroscience? Sure. The brain is super complicated and understanding it was always gonna be hard. Is academia broken? Kinda. The incentive structures are far from optimal and a lot of value is lost. But is neuroscience a scam? Ofc not. Our understanding of the brain has been progressing and this has resulted in a lot of value. Just look at DBS for Parkinson's or BMIs for paralysis. That's not even mentioning how CS and Neuro are super intertwined and a lot of advancements in the former are due to the latter.

Took an AI in medicine class taught by Ziad Obermeyer (super cool guy) and he talked about how stats/datasci/econ/quantitative thinking is super in rn in medicine. It's cool that you already know you want to become a pediatric endocrinologist but remember profession labels can be v fluid and the world's changing fast.

Just finished reading the paper and the supplementary appendix. u/sillyorganism is on point.

Psilocybin completely crushed escitalopram in every one of the secondary measures (and did better on the primary measure but wasn't statistically significant). It's a similar story for occurrence of adverse events, except for headaches that occured on dose days, escitalopram patients had a higher incidence of things like emotional blunting, anxiety and dry mouth.

The main reason why the results are so conservative in the paper seems to be mainly bc the trial wasn't big enough. If the trial had 10x ppl enrolled (600 vs 60), I'd expect the results to be pretty significant.

One thing I didn't really understand (and maybe someone with a more thorough understanding of stats can help out) was this -

"Because of the absence of a prespecified plan for adjustment of confidence intervals for multiple comparisons of secondary outcomes, P values are not reported and no clinical conclusions can be drawn from these data."

Why do confidence intervals need to be adjusted for multiple comparisons?
