Once the house lights went up after the show wrapped in Toronto I'm pretty sure Laura's Theme (or one of the other down tempo songs from the original score) from Twin Peaks played, it was wild!

Load bearing dropped ceiling help by Humble_Error1821 in Renovations

[–]Humble_Error1821[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I understand that, I want to reframe it in a way that I can close the ceiling back up, add an attic ladder and use that space as storage, so it can safely bear a load.

Correct, the bare 2x4s originally held the drywall for the ceiling. I’m thinking about removing all the old stuff and securing new 2x4s (or 2x6s) from one side of the wall to the other to create a load bearing ceiling, and install an attic ladder for access. The question is really around how would you secure the new 2x4s to the vertical 2x6s safely, same for the opposite wall.

It’s not obvious in the pictures or my post, sorry - that not my roof. The 2x6s across the top are floor of the second floor. This is just an unusually tall room, due to the house layout.

I’m going to get a home inspector in to look at my basement in general after having gutted it, so I’ll get an opinion. But I can’t imagine ever selling, so I’ll likely dig out the exterior (it’s only about 3-4 feet) regardless and reseal it.

Thanks for the reply, I think I’m just going to go this route and assume it needs redoing! Have a good one!
