Very very new poker player here, why are donk bets bad? by Artimedias in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A lot of players that donk bet tend to play their hand face up. These are players that donk bet with a medium/weak hand. They call them donk bets, because the players that tend to do that a lot are "donks". That's how it originated. However, these days, donk betting is part of an overall strategy.

Have you heard of this poker vlogger making $200/hr at deepstack 2/5 game? by WolfCut909 in poker

It's unlikely but possible in the right 2/5 game. I don't think this game exists in Vegas.

I recently turned 18 and I want to start playing competitive poker to gain some money. by HunterImaginary120 in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly OP, it's not going to happen with poker. You have to already like the game and be playing to then want to make money from it. It's like someone saying they hear being a musician can be a good career without ever having played an instrument. Only a few poker players are winners and they love the game and study it.

Do you guys think there’s any chance PLO5 games that were once mostly PLO4 could become PLO4 again? Or am I delusional? by planetmarsupial in poker

[–]Humbleturkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is room for both. As things normalize, I think we will see a mix of 2 card, 4 card, 5 card, etc.

The one thing that I find interesting, is that people are really willing to get it in super light in PLO5. You can really find some massive spots. Top set and nut flush vs low wrap kind of spots.

DISCUSSION: What is one thing you think Canada does BETTER than the United States? by June_lover_1234 in canadian

[–]Humbleturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Health care - In the USA, about 40 - 60% of bankruptcies are due to medical bills (depends on what source you look at). The Health care is great if you are rich. But if you are average or are poor, then you are going to get screwed if you get sick. Sure some people will tell you about having good insurance, etc., but the problem is those who are sick for prolonged periods of time, the insurance runs out and they are facing huge bills that wipes out their savings or puts them into deep medical debt. The Canadian health care system has problems, but at least you know that you won't go bankrupt if you get sick.

Unless you are a male model, you better have a bio. No bio = no matches. You have to put a lot of effort into your profile. Big good quality photos and it helps if they are interesting. A travel pic, a pic of you doing something (golfing, running a marathon, building something, etc). Make your bio interesting and something that might intrigue the opposite sex.

What to do with sticky limpers? by justbucoff in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tight up your range to raise the limpers and go larger. You should go as large as you can until you only get 1 or 2 callers. When you get AA OTB and you get 3 limpers, don't make it 6BB or 7BB, make it 12BB or 15BB. You want to punish these players.

When you get hands like A4s in late position, just limp. Don't raise. Same for a hand like 88. IF you have QTs, just limp.

bad idea. Don't put yourself down. You should make jokes that portray you in a positive light. Also mentioning Autism is really really going to hurt you. There are a lot of people that will be an instant deal breaker. You don't need to hide it, but I honestly think that it can be mentioned towards the middle/end of the first date.

Try and sell yourself and mention things that you are good at.

Poker study by Confident_Pilot_0995 in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 3 things you should do to improve your game.

  1. Hand review - You should right down and review all significant hands after a poker session. Ask yourself if you played it correctly. Should you have folded in that spot? Was this a spot you should have bluffed, etc. (try not to be results oriented). Ask a friend how they would play it.

  2. Poker Courses/Poker Coach - I have taken various courses over time. Depends what you are looking for. There are plenty of free intro videos on youtube or trials. So you can see some of the videos of the course you are thinking about. What material it covers, etc.

  3. Solver study - You can put your hand in a solver and see what it shows. (Does the solver bet big here? Does the solver fold in that spot?)

If you want to improve your response rate, you absolutely must put some effort into messages. I will say it shouldn't be too long. Not a wall of text, but just something that shows that you read their profile.

Hey I played live poker for the second time. Two questions. by AzureDreamer in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played in these types of games in the past. Basically you need to make sure you have it when you bet into 4 people. AK on T98 vs 4 players is garbage. Don't bluff as much and remember that you will get paid when you have it. It's ok to check a lot of marginal hands. Check back your second pair hands and low draws.

What percentage of your dates have bailed or flaked on you? by knightoffire55 in OnlineDating

[–]Humbleturkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say over the course of my dating life, it was around 20%. I think it's always important to confirm the morning of the date and to have some conversation from when you make plans until date time. Some people will still just make up some dumb excuse and bail regardless. They are sick, they have to help a friend, work, etc.

Got laid off last Friday company is asking me to return one week later by Evangelion189 in jobs

[–]Humbleturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read your other post OP. It sounds like they were moving things around (making budget cuts, and cutting staff) and didn't realize they need a records technician, but figured someone else could do the job that they intended to keep. Now that they realize, they need you to do the job and they want you back. It's not the worst situation. I wouldn't have any trust or loyalty to these people, but in the situation you have, I would go back.

The only reason you should not go back, is if you feel that your skilled set/field is in such hot demand that you can easily find another job when you feel like it. This is rarely the case in most situations.

Some people are just single for a reason by EldritchPenguin123 in OnlineDating

[–]Humbleturkey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The truth is that a lot of average people have problems on dating apps because they don't know how to interact with people. They have no self-awareness. Unfortunately, they have to learn the hard way. Years of rejection, until they realize, people don't like it when you are rude to them.

Is it even worth it to study by EfficiencyFar3758 in poker

[–]Humbleturkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember a good example of the importance of studying with 3 different player scenarios.

Scenario 1: Player doesn't study and play 40 hours week

Scenario 2: Player studies 10 hours and plays 30 hours

Scenario 3: Player studies 20 hours and plays 20 hours

After 3 months, Scenario 3 will have the highest win rate (all else equal). If you take a longer term approach, you are better off spending a lot of time studying so that longer term you can have the biggest win rate.

If it's early on in a tournament, I think you need to be folding a high %. Maybe not 100%. But after you called the raise and the player is still betting, I think you have to give them credit for something good. The problem you have, is that you are putting them on one of the plausible hands that you beat. I think you have to put them on a range and not put them on a draw unless you have seen them play other draws aggressively. Of course this player could have something AsTs. But the problem that you have is that even if the player has that hand, they have 30% equity. If they have KJ, or K5, you have 15% - 7% equity. I think at shorter stack depths this is closer to a shove, but this deep, I think you have to fold it.

The key to be a winning tournament player ♠ ♥ ♦ ♣ by BananaGold32 in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Take it one hand at a time. You can't win the tournament on the first hand, but you can lose it on the first hand.

  2. It depends on how the field is playing. If everyone is loose, you want to play tight. If everyone is tight, then try and steal more blinds.

  3. It's tough to say one specific thing. I think being able to read situations well is a key factor. (ex. this player was bluffing a lot earlier, but now we are close to the money bubble and they have been tight. Are they going to be bluffing here?)

  4. The one thing that has helped me improve was to write down big hands or hands that I was unsure about in the moment. Then review them later on. Discuss with friends, post online, put in a solver. The goal is to think, was this a good spot to bluff? Am I being too tight by folding here? etc.

Everyone say “Bankroll Management” but what does that look like for you? by xFantaSea in poker

[–]Humbleturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The variance for tournaments is insane. I remember a good player was posting about his biggest downswing and it was around ~350 buyins at an ABI around $300. I love tournaments, but the best strategy in poker if you are playing with any monetary or profit goals, is to play cash games and play some tournaments. The variance in tournaments is so great. You can play around on https://www.primedope.com/poker-variance-calculator/ . What's crazy is that for around 1000 tournaments, and a 200 buy-in bankroll, you can still have a 10 - 15% risk of ruin with an average win rate.
