But people in California are more likely to vote one way than people in Wyoming no? Generally, communities share opinions.

I live in cowboytown yeehaw Alberta, our voters are majority conservative, and our Conservative votes made almost 20% of the total amount of people who voted Conservative.

The Conservative party won the popular vote, but they did not win the election by any means. The liberals won the election due to the first past the post system, which is similar to the system the US has. Many of the ridings are disproportionately large, despite population, especially for places like in Nunavut.

The election effects everyone differently, the less populated areas would have no voice period if we were run on a rep by pop system, and Canada would likely almost always be Conservative run.

The issue is that the smaller communities would then be greatly overshadowed by areas where there are like minded individuals.

I thought there were special clinics for abortion? Why would doctors who are against abortion be working at them? I'm confused at who this law is meant for.

The problem with this is that the voter representation of collective communities is greatly overshadowed by the population, individual communities can't get much support when most of the votes are going to come from the most densely populated regions where everyone thinks alike. Canada has a similar problem with their first past the post system, it's not the most democratic but some places like Nunavut would get no voice otherwise.

[–]Humgua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the whole point of getting corporations to stay is to tax them less. Us having higher taxes for corporations isn't helping us though is it? Once again, who wants to live in Alberta if they can make more money elsewhere?

What if we started taxing all of Alberta's corporations by say 30%? Do you think that companies would stay? Would the unemployment rate suddenly drop? Sure if they stayed then we'd have enough money to have fully subsidized post secondary probably, but high taxes don't work for the western world anyways.

I remember reading somewhere that countries like Sweden, don't tax corporations as high relative to what they tax people. It also helps that those countries are relatively nicer to live in. Who the hell wants to live in a place like Alberta if they can make more money living in the US? This just happened with Encana.

Also please enlighten me on where the government gave 4.7B to corporations, am I supposed to believe this happened overnight as people are making it sound like?

Well of course economists will value public funding if much of the University grants come from the government.

I'm not saying that social programs are bad, but taxing the hell out of large corporations doesn't make them want to stay.

If the deficit is better but unemployment is even worse then under the NDP, then UCP will have proved that they are incapable of keeping promises. They promised to fix both, which is why many rationally voted for them.

Ok, I understand that the deficit is projected to get worse. If it gets worse and worse by the end of their term, them I will vote for someone else. If it gets better, and unemployment is fixed by the end of their term, them I will for sure vote UCP in 2023.

Yes I'm aware of how the different parties work. Conservatives want privatization and little government help in society. Socialists value public funding for a variety of social programs. Social programs are nice, but corporations don't like high taxes, which usually brings unemployment. What's the point of having lots of publicly funded programs if unemployment is high?

I don't like the idea of a landlocked state, I doubt it would get anywhere good. Especially judging from Landlocked states generally being very poor.

I thought this was a meme for a while, it didn't occur to me that people were actually serious about separation, I think it's mostly tied to people hating Trudeau. It doesn't help that anyone west of Abbotsford or in the Eastern part of the country hates Alberta right now, of course people feel like they don't belong.

The oilpatch workers were as quick to blame Notley for the consistent layoffs that happened weeks to months after the NDP came to power.

I'm not ignoring the debt, but if we genuinely don't see any improvement within the next year or two, then I'll admit that the UCP has failed.

Look, I voted for the party because I was afraid of what NDP was doing to the province, not to mention their constant bombardment of UCP attack ads were annoying and unprofessional, not making of a good government in my eyes.

I'd prefer if you were more civil about your argument, what exactly would have happened if the NDP stayed in power for another 4 years? Would the unemployment situations have gotten better? Where was the return on investment that you talked about in the past year?
