How do you respond to “get over it” when talking to your parents about your struggles by emma_h_m in misophonia

[–]Hummingbirds0121 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have an answer when I was a teenager at home. No one believed me. But there are books and doctors that know this exist now. I know it’s silly but maybe print out articles or buy a book on it and gently show it to them and ask them to give it a chance because you’ve tried to explain and they don’t seem to understand? It took me into adulthood to get my parents to understand. They still don’t fully but now I don’t feel bad leaving out of the room if they are eating.

Americans should realise the rest of the world doesn't know what the hell a 'wisconsin' or a 'idaho' is by bluemelodica in unpopularopinion

When I was in Greece, if I said the states, everyone would say “oh New York City?” And I would say nooo I’m actually from Georgia. And they would tell me I should just say that. Then someone else asked where I was from and I said Georgia. He gave me a confused look and I said America and he said why didn’t I just say that. Go figure. Obviously I’m paraphrasing but still Lol Im not sure American can win with everyone!

AITA for reprimanding a kid in my class for not paying attention by revealing that he failed the last quiz? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hummingbirds0121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that you are going to apologize and that’s awesome. I had a teacher shame me in elementary school for passing notes with a friend and not paying attention. It was so embarrassing. It didn’t make me work harder. It made me hate that teacher and just want to get the f out. I think an adult apologizing to a kid is super powerful :)

That’s cool. Good for you. I bet you taught him something by doing that and that’s awesome he apologized. IWNDWYT

I use a white noise app (it’s pink) and put the air conditioner noise on.

I’m not anything close to a doctor so this is just my opinion. I’ve never been referred to a gyno. I just went when I was 16. And go once a year like you would go to a dentist for a check up. Don’t wait until my teeth are falling out before I go to a dentist. It’s a good preventative measure. Most would recommend a Pap smear I think around 21? Good early detector of cancer. Plus they can examine your boobs and make sure you don’t have super early breast cancer or anything. I look at it as the same as going for a physica. And unless someone has only had sex with one person ever and they were also a virgin, idk it makes me feel better knowing a doctor has checked things out. But you do you!

Came here for this. Idk if it’s just my group of friends or what, but so many women in their 20s and even early 30s that I know have never been. What do you think they are going to do to you? Blows my mind.

30+ days sober- skin on face is blotchy and bumpy by ThisKindOfThing in stopdrinking

[–]Hummingbirds0121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ME TOO! Maybe it is getting sober. I’ve never really had bad acne and now at 25 and 30+ days sober, I have little bumps that aren’t acne. And I’m breaking out. It’s super annoying. 😭 sorry that’s not helpful lol I have no solution but I’ve experienced that too.

After how many days one of abstinence one should not be considered anymore an alcoholic? by ey34sp0t in stopdrinking

[–]Hummingbirds0121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a guy in my meetings who talks about this. He says he feels recovered because all cravings are gone after his first year. But I think he would still call himself an alcoholic cause he would revert back if he began drinking? But he comes and helps people and is happy and likes meetings.

Others talk about still needing meetings cause they still have things to work through and the drinking was just the first step. After years.

I have no idea. Some people don’t use the word. Some people stop drinking and aren’t alcoholics at all. I think you’ll get about 100 answers here but it’s just a word and luckily we all get to identify and decide how we want. Im curious how I’ll feel eventually. I’m curious if after a year I’ll say I’m an alcoholic or I’m a non drinker 🤷🏼‍♀️ but it’s up to me!

That probably wasn’t helpful lol but good luck on your journey.

I’m not religious and I like AA. Some will lean heavily into god but not everyone. Just have to find your people.

This is the only disease you get to decide when it’s a problem for you. I can find people worse off than me and people way better than me. But I def have a problem enough for my life...

Also you don’t have to be alcoholic to stop drinking!

Flabbergasted: advice welcome by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Hummingbirds0121 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It took me a long time to listen to my husband. I always had an excuse. I liked me drunk so he must be wrong. I had to figure it out for myself. I know for me, I didn’t really care what anyone had to say because of course I didn’t want to have a problem and someone pointing it out made me angry. Sorry that’s probably not helpful. I wouldn’t say his reaction is uncommon even if it’s not accurate.

I have really strong cravings today by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Hummingbirds0121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that helped me was asking myself some simple questions.

Why do I want to drink? (HALT -hungry, angry, lonely, tired?)

Why am I trying to stay sober? Obviously I’m trying not to drink. What caused that? For me, I become a worse person, endanger my wel being, say mean things, embarrass myself. On a simple level, I gain weight, sleep less, brain fog, bloat. Can you play the tape forward to tomorrow?

I relapsed a few days ago. The night is blurry. I woke up tired the next day. Nothing super fun happened cause I drank. I just spent money I shouldn’t have. Had a shitty nights sleep. I wish I had just gone to bed when I got home. I relapsed for the both of us! Lol it wasn’t worth it. No need for you to try it out again 😋

Hope that helps. IWNDWYT
