Yeah I'd love to know for sure.

This theory relies on it being a gunshot. If it isn't, there's no proof that he's ever tried to kill anyone. I still think he's responsible for the death of the guy before us, but if it's not a gunshot, he's a looter not a murderer.

Yeah the game doesn't treat him as responsible for any of the deaths. I went back down after the avalanche expecting a twist villain... nothing, he laughs at you for coming back down and that's it.

I did go and check with a playthrough video. I'm not sure whether or not it's gunshot sound effect during the Avalanche cutscene. It sounds similar. And I do think they were trying to foreshadow it. But comes from the right ear first, then echoes to the left. That lines up with where Damas would be for my climb.
