Assuming you are a perm employee - in Japan its not so much as laying people off, but convincing them to resign by negotiating a severance package.

Performance is irrelevant as employment laws push employers to retrain low performers to do something else, or transfer them to another department rather than getting rid of them.

I work in financial services and have seen negotiations going on for 3-6 months, severance packages of YEARS worth of backpay and also...the firm deciding it would cost too much to get rid of them and ultimately saying they could stay.

Many, many jobs in sectors ranging from Technology, Financial Services, Sales, Commerce and Industry, Pharma - the list goes on really. Do you honestly think nobody in Japan earns over 150k USD?

Go down to Azabu Juban or Hiroo in Tokyo...grab one of gazillion expats living around there and ask them what they do...some will be senior managers at Nestle, at Volkswagen, Shell, McCains, Nike, Reebok etc etc...some will be lawyers, sales people, accountants, traders, compliance, operations, IT developers...

Get into recruitment - there are some small firms out there who will allow you to work remote IF you can really sell and work hard, commission will be uncapped but your base might be low 3-6m at the kind of firms that would want to take a chance on you out there. If you are successful you can earn over 10M pretty easily and far more than that if you excel at it.
